I'm kind of with you there, OP. I do understand the appeal but I can never get over the dub/noncon vibes. I mean, at least regular non/dubcon doesn't hide behind another name and pretend to be the positive thing a lot of a/b/o fics pretend to be.

To me it's kinda like a combination of the BDSMverse and Pon Farr tropes. Which I both like, so ABO works for me. (or would, if so much of it wasn't appallingly badly written.)

I'm pretty sure the appeal of ABO fic is closely tied to the old No Responsibility thing a la rape fantasy. Basically, people (women especially) find their own sexual desires shameful due to societal pressures and they use rape fantasy (or ABO fantasy, in this case) to explore their sexual response guiltlessly.

IE: "It's not MY fault I want sex! It's my ingrained biological drive!"

Or something like that. Maybe. I dunno. Sexual fantasies and their underlying causes are complicated.

I don't care for ABO when it's strictly about the sex and babby making. (I've seen one really good ABO fic, which I loved because it flipped gender roles and "who would be in what" preconceptions completely on their heads. Then again, I don't read many ABO fics, but I'll take recs...)

What I'm more interested in these types of worlds / settings / AUs is the culture and the classes therein. It always seems like (and this may be a highly selective memory at play here, and if that's the case, I apologize) the Alphas are always really wealthy, and Omegas are like pampered slaves for their assigned / mated / "omg it's destiny" Alpha. Therefore, I wonder: What are these cultures like? Are there Alphas who dislike the whole concept because it feels like dub- / noncon? Are there Omegas who hate their lot in life and want to go out in the country and start up a farm or something? Have the Omegas ever tried to revolt against the Alphas (and to some degree the Betas)? If so, what was the end result?

I feel like if sex and/or pairings didn't come up in the course of the fic, ABO could be a really interesting thing—or rather, world—to explore (my love of dystopian AUs and fiction aside). It has potential; as it is, if that's your thing, go right on ahead, it's not like I can crawl through the Internet and whine at you to not read it.

I cannot stand "Alpha Beta Omega dynamics" fanfiction. Just scrolling past those prompts on a kink meme fills me with so much secondhand embarrassment. I don't mind if other people enjoy it - no judgement - I just do not understand.

You know, most people who are into don't seem to mind if someone else isn't...but the way people who feel the need to talk about how they *aren't* kinda rubs the wrong way since there's always the 'I don't judge but...' which has the same problem as 'No offense but...". I was completely "Bzuh?" about it when I first learned of it, even though it seemed like it might have kinky elements that I might find interesting under the right circumstances. But still, "Bzuh?" And then I read one short fic, just one, that had all those circumstances, and, jeezus, they got me too. I'll be writing it myself soon, probably.

Omegaverse is something I have a love/hate relationship with. I am completely uninterested in the sex and noncon stuff. I generally don't like how even the world construction deals with the inequality.

The thing is, I am interested in gender dynamics and exploring them. Omegaverse fucks with gender dynamics so much and at the same time can make it relatable to our system in some rare cases. So I think someone could do something really cool with it. I'm just not sure how. I'm reminded of an old secret where they said they wanted a war/revolution. I think that might be interesting.

As for you not getting it... uh... great? Like, you don't have to? I don't get the extreme love or hate people have for Justin Bieber but I realize that, you know, other people aren't my mind clones and so they think/feel/exist differently. I may meet someone and never understand them as a person, to their core, and that's okay. So when you get to the little things like kinks? It really doesn't matter much at all.

Can I just say, as a counterpoint, that it's the society in those fics that squicks me more than any of the sexytimes.

Like, I've read sexbits in fic that just Were Not My Thing, and mostly I just skip a bit past that to get to the character bits.

But in ABO fic, there's this whole creepy society. And maybe we'll be dealing with the main characters being bastions of Omega Rights or something, but it's still just...it's just way too creepy. Just...combining civil rights problems with Rape Is Okay Sometimes and almost always a dash of victim blaming ("well, what did ____ expect, leaving the house in heat/forgetting his no-heat pills/trying to do this job etc"), and a society that literally does not need women (and to me, this stands out a lot in Avengers fic, because even as slash-happy as it is, the women usually get to be in the fic in a positive way)...

That's the squick to me.

Improbable biology and "scenting the air" and what-not aside, the society itself is so massively unpleasant, and the way that even good characters act because of that society is so creepy that I just can't get any enjoyment out of the character side of the fic.
