Re: Fans of Star Trek TNG unite!
I could ramble about how much I love it for ages, but if there's one thing that I love the most about it, it's that it's so totally unflinchingly honest and straightforward and unironic about portraying the characters as sincerely honorable, principled, dedicated to their jobs, passionate, altruistic, and professional, no pulling out the rug and mocking this sincerity by going "haha, they're actually doing this all due to some twisted bitter personal issue other than just plain loving their jobs". And all without making them boringly perfect, because they would lapse into imperfect behavior very often, but those were always portrayed AS understandable lapses or obstacles to be overcome, not integral static parts of their characters.
There was never any trace of embarrassment or attempts to downplay the idealizing of human behavior, space exploration, and futuristic society in general (with the pleasing exception of the irritating upper Starfleet bureaucracy, of course), and no condescending message on the part of the writers that flaws are the only interesting parts of a character, or to pander to viewers by dragging the characters down to make them relatable rather than role models (and yet the little character-building moments made them relatable anyway). I also love deconstructive ironic shows full of flaw-defined characters too of course (see: DS9), but I really love that there was one show that completely stayed away from all that, as it's a formula that's gotten really overused in recent years.
I love every character except Pulaski (yes, even Wesley -- he was irritating in the first season, but that was more the writers overusing him as a deus ex machina than anything else), but my favorite by far is Data. In fact, Data is one of my top favorite fictional characters in any TV show ever.
The show's season finale is also one of my top favorite finales of any show ever. However, I cannot fucking abide season 1. Not so much because the plots were terrible (though they were), but because there's something about the tone and style and attitude that's just wrong. On the other hand, seeing the contrast makes me appreciate the later seasons all the more.
