Food you can't eat

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sad about realizing that my "safe" amount of ice cream (before my lactose intolerance/IBS fucks me over) has shrunk to about one scoop :( I miss the days of heaping bowls of the stuff... /sob

So commiserate with me, f!s - what food(s) do you want and can't have because nature decided it hates you?

Baker's Square's French silk pie used to be my very favorite food in the world. But now I'm both gluten- and lactose-intolerant and haven't got a hope of being able to eat it. ;_;

Because of a variety of health problems, I can't have anything that's not, like, yogurt and Ensure. :/

Walnuts.

The day I am robbed of my ability to handle pecans, almonds and peanuts though, is the day I leave this world.

anything with wheat, barley, or other gluten-containing things

artificial sweeteners (the worst thing is that processed foods sometimes just say "sugar" but it turns out to be the artificial kind argggh)

raw carrots (they invariably make me throw up vOv once cooked they are fine though)

it's made it so that eating out is pretty much out of the question and buying some foodstuffs is trial and error with "okay, let's eat this and see whether my stomach revolts in a few hours or next morning yay!" and if it passes, great, one more thing available (unless they change the ingredients) or one more thing to avoid

Oh man, I'm gluten intolerant too (as well as lactose intolerant), and I can sympathize with how hard it is to eat out. I can't just go to a restaurant on a whim; I have to research it and make sure they've got something I can eat. I kind of resent it when my family decides to go out to eat and I'm stuck eating a shitty salad because that's practically all the place has that's safe.

I haven't been able to handle any kind of seafood in years, and I miss it so much.

Celiac sprue almost took all my favorite things. Fortunately we have a local bakery that makes a non-wheat Sourdough bread that is awesomely tasty (as well as some excellent GF cookie varieties).
There are alternatives to all I "lost" and some are pretty great.

I haven't worked out a replacement for Key Lime Pie yet but I can still have flan, so no worries.

Late/random onset allergies suck. For me, it's apples (and pears and cherries :( ). My lips get swollen and numb and my throat itches, so it's hardly life-threatening and goes away after several hours, but argh it happens most with Fujis, which I like the best. Sometimes I eat some anyway, and chase it with milk.

Bubblegum or candy that sticks too much to my teeth. They have really bad enamel so I've got tons of cavities, which mean tons of fix-ups that can come off when chewing gum.

I've gotten used to it, but for a while in my teens it was devastating to be deprived of mint gum. To this day, it makes me sad that I can't take it when other people offer it to me.

I can't eat anything that requires a lot of chewing - most raw fruits/veggies, nuts, gummy candies - or opening my jaw widely - burgers, large sandwiches, etc. It's a jaw issue, not an allergic one, though.

Milk. Ice cream. Yoghurt. Strangely I'm okay with cheese, which is good because cheese is like nirvana to me. Chocolate (migraines).

I probably should avoid wheat more than I do thanks to it being connected to increased inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis/neuropathic pain sufferers... but sometimes I just want to eat something without dissecting its ingredients. :(

Kiwi and avocado. Yay allergies.

I'm not lactose intolerant per se, but I seem to have a limit of like, a bowl of ice cream.

Shrimp, crab, and scallops. :( And possibly other yummy seafood as well, those are just the ones I was tested for.

I've never even had a noticeable reaction to any of them, but my doctor sent me for a general allergy blood test and those all came up at fairly high levels. It's really hard to convince myself to stay away from them because I've never actually felt any worse after eating them--as opposed to cheese, which has made me miserable enough to never want to touch it again.

As someone who IS allergic to shellfish, please believe me, when I say STAY FAR FAR AWAY. Even if you haven't had a noticeable reaction, it's because you haven't had a noticeable reaction YET. The blood test does not lie. Trust me on this.

Aaaaaaaaaaaanything dairy. I used to be OK with dairy-that-was-not-milk-and-mixed-with-lots-of-sugar but since my GERD got so bad I needed meds, even the "may contain dairy" stuff sets me off sometimes. Gah.

Re: Food you can't eat

Shellfish. Originally I could eat them but one day I just developed an allergy and it's been my biggest (food-related) tragedy. I get so tempted sometimes, but even things cooked with the same utensils as shellfish make my throat itch.

Also, I can't eat Aunt Jemima pancakes. They make my stomach hurt and my throat itch. It's likely the pancake mix, but I also stay clear of the syrup for the same reason.

QUESTION!!!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
So, I drink milky cafe latte like, every morning. Almost every time I do, I have diarrhea after. Like, in a matter of less than two minutes, sometimes before I finish the drink. Same when I eat yogurt. (there is likely a connection here, I'm just stubborn and/or an idiot.)

Am I lactose intolerant?

I don't eat/drink a lot of dairy. I'm vegetarian but used to be vegan and didn't drink cow milk, now I prefer soy but will drink the cafe latte with milk if I can't find a soy one. Cheese doesn't bother me. Before I was vegan, this was never a problem. I thought maybe since I cut out dairy, I developed it? is that even possible?

I can't have mushrooms because they give me the gas and the shits. I keep eating them because I'm stupid and go all, "Oh, but it will be worth it because this meal is just so delicious." And then I am incapacitated and sitting on the toilet for hours gdi

Same with milk. Not sure if building up lactose tolerance is a total thing I can do, but I miss drinking a big cup of warm homo milk and not feeling bad afterward.

Sugary food, due to diabetes. Onions, capsicum, olives, chillis, due to allergies. Most dairy but thankfully not cheese, because of mild lactose intolerance. Meat that isn't lean due to... reasons we aren't sure of yet. I might have IBS! But the doctor isn't sure because apparently it's a diagnosis of exclusion sort of thing.

Oh, and grapefruit because I'm on a cholesterol medication, and carrots and garlic need to be in moderate amounts because I'm on blood thinners.

I too have milk problems, but I can usually get away with it if I take 2 Acidophilus pills a day.

I used to be allergic to Strawberries, I luckily grew out of it in my teens *yay*

I miss fresh fruits and vegetables SOOOO MUCH. The other day I was really really craving broccoli with ranch dressing. But if I eat vegetables, not only will I fill up on food with not enough calories to sustain me, but I probably won't be able to eat anything for the rest of the day because my stomach apparently doesn't know how to deal with anything that contains fiber. :P

Spicy things. Like, not just super-spicy things. Things with the MILDEST HINT of spice makes my mouth feel like it's on fire. It's really damn annoying. I've tried desensitising myself by just trying little bits of mild stuff, and I still can't tolerate it ;_;

Also, lactose intolerance, but that's been a non-issue since I became vegan. (Coconut-based ice cream. Hnnnngh <3 )
