The first thing that pops into my head whenever I hear someone complain passionately about something in fandom is "first world problems". I can't even help it at this point. I think if your biggest concern in life is if your OTP is made canon or if your friends ship something you don't, then you have a pretty rosy life and need to start appreciating what you have. There are so many issues in the real world that someone could get angry over yet these people choose to whine about a mean BNF. I don't know how people like that deal with the real world.

Of course that's not anybody's biggest concern, but people can't air their dirty personal laundry just anywhere, whereas it's okay to complain about fandom as much as you like. Getting passionate over something as inconsequential as fandom is the way many people deal with their much more serious demons.

That's exactly what I was going to say. When I'm discussing fandom stuff I get passionate about my OTP becoming canon or whatever BECAUSE I have actual important things to worry about and fandom helps me escape from that.

You haven't seen the people who get posted on Fandom Wank have you? There are plenty of people in fandom like the OP is describing.

Day late, no one will ever see this, etc.

I have bills overdue, my housemate is laid off until about Aug. 25 and is getting only unemployment until they're back on the schedule, running out of toothpaste and going to have to buy more with dimes out of the piggie bank, need a dentist appointment I can't afford, desperately need new glasses I can't afford, don't know how I'm going to manage heating this winter, my cousin has a colon ulcer, my sister in another state is having health problems, car insurance bill is due five days before I get my next paycheck ... and it goes on and on.

And I'd rather spend my free time bitching about how there's no Glaber/Spartacus fic out there, because the shit I have to put up with, the Universe could at least throw me a hot fic about Glaber having his way with the Thracian to take my mind off things for awhile. I mean, is this too much to ask?
