It's not for the taste.

It's because drinking cough syrup can get you fucked up. It's a recreational drug.

Yeah, but it's levels of disgusting to the point that the fucked up high you'd get is just not worth it. I guess I've just never wanted to get high enough to bother with gross things.

You could say the same thing about cigarettes or alcohol (not to mention pretty much every other recreational drug out there) - peoples' taste buds vary wildly depending on genetics and diet.

Also, some brands taste better than others, and I'm sure you could mix them or chase them with something more appetizing. Cough syrup is a relatively cheap drug, considering; people make do to get their hit.

This is why purple drank exists. You mix the cough syrup with soda and candy to make it palatable.

But really it's not at all about the taste, it's about the high.

Some cough syrups I liked the taste of when I was younger, but I never drank a bottle... Still, every once in a while even when I wasn't sick I'd still have a spoonful because it helped teenaged!me sleep.
