That's quite poignant, actually.

I don't really know what else to say. At least he knew you and didn't leave them to be sold to some used bookstore or something. And you have the opportunity to, I guess, use the books as they were meant to be used, and also to try and spread them around if you want to do that.

That honestly seems appropriate - he wanted you to have them and love them, and it's a way of knowing him better in retrospect. You could write reviews for them, maybe?

That's really, really sad. I'm sorry you couldn't have bonded over them before it was too late.

I think he'd be happy to know how much joy those books give you. Maybe through reading them you might pick up what his tastes and preferences were, so you could get to know him a bit better even though he's gone.

You know, you could use this as a life experience to get to know potentially interesting people more...

And secondly: if I died, and somebody would be really happy about getting my fandom stuff, that would really make me happy, because I hate the idea of that stuff ending up in a dumpster somewhere. So, maybe he'd have felt the same. Read them. Enjoy them. Treasure them. And if you're ever through with them, pass them on to someone who might appreciate them.

Exactly. He wanted you to make use of them, so do!

It's a shame about what happened to him, though. He sounds like a lovely guy.

I don't think you should feel too guilty for being happy about your gift. Obviously he wanted you to have them and to enjoy them, you know?

I think that's what your friend would have wanted, OP. He knew you liked sci-fi, and wanted to make you happy. There were other avenues he could have taken (donating it somewhere, perhaps), but I think he'd be glad you were happy with what he gave you.

[Picture is the covers of various science-fiction books: "Dune" by Frank Herbert, "3001 The Final Odyssey" by Artur C. Clarke, "He Do the Time Police in Different Voices" by David Langford, "2001 A Space Odyssey" by Arthur C. Clarke and Children of Dune by Frank Herbert. There is also a digital image of a man made of metal falling apart, but I can't find the original artist.]

An acquaintance passed away and left all their old science fiction books to me. (I think I was the only science fiction fan they knew.) There's about 80 books. I feel bad for being so happy about getting these books and for not knowing him better.

I wish my friend who died in January would've done something like that.

I'm happy for you, Anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
oh :( um, I'm sorry you missed the chance OP. Life is big and long, you're not going to get to know everyone as much as you'd like

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
...this is gonna sound shitty but...only 80? ...I...kinda feel bad for whoever gets my collection now. >>;;

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
da

oh man I haven't even thought about where my books will go when I pass on. hmm. I'm thinking maybe the nearest secondhand book store? and my games...I feel bad for my PC ones that cannot be passed on due to accoutn lcoking or whatever :/ what a waste...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's the thing that made me kind of depressed about this secret.

Seems to me he knew you would appreciate them, regardless of the level of intimacy you shared. I would certainly feel greater satisfaction bequeathing my favorite books (or games, or photos, etc) unto someone who I knew would read and appreciate them than to someone who might be closer but wouldn't enjoy them.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's lovely. There's some great books there OP. I read a lot of those classic authors when I was a kid, and they are amazing.

How nice to be left something, must be a bit strange if you didn't know him well, I'd be really sad to think someone thought to remember me in their will if I hadn't been close to them.

Gosh. That was really nice of them to think of you though. And you can learn to know them better through the books. He'd definitely want you to be happy about them, anyway, even if you aren't about the way they came to you.

Something similar actually happened to my mother. When she was a child, another girl on her street died of leukaemia, who my mum hardly knew. The girl's mother turned up one day and said she wanted my mother to have her daughter's collection of books - there were loads of Edwardian editions: Little Women, What Katy Did, The Secret Garden, a Little Princess...they must have been handed down or bought specially because they were all old. Anyway my mum still had them when I was born and she let me read them all when I was old enough and they had a big influence on me. So that gesture has gone a long way, and it was a lovely thing, even though the story behind it was so sad.
