Fictional comfort food

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What piece(s) of fictional media do you regularly go back to when you need to feel comforted or soothed or cheered up? My top go-to's for each medium I regularly consume are Harry Potter for books, Star Trek TNG for TV, and the Disney animated canon for movies. How about you guys?

I watch the Disney movie Enchanted, mostly because it's about Amy Adams being adorable for one hour and a half (and then kicking a dragon's ass).

Galaxy quest for movies, Black Books for TV, and Dragon Age: Origins for games - my first fandom, and playing it still makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Books? Oh, too many to list.

Always "A Civil Campaign". I don't recommend anyone start the series there because it's like the 3/4 mark now and it's kind of a departure in formula, being explicitly a romantic comedy (not a space opera/mystery/adventure) and having like five POV characters where all the others only have 1 or 2. It's basically "An Ideal Husband" IN SPACE. It's so funny and comforting, it's the first one of the series I got for my own so I could take it to college.

aawww man I thought this was going to be a thread about delicious-looking food in media and I was gearing up to talk about the delicious food in both Ghibli movies and the Hobbit, which I finally watched and which made me covet Bilbo's pantry.

now I'm hungry :(

The original A-Team show because it's so over the top and goofy, it usually works at cheering me up. And the LoTR films(plus the Hobbit) work very well at soothing me, plus I have sort of a lazy cudddle-up-with-a-blanket-plus-kitty ritual when watching them for added warm fuzzy feelings.

Starsky and Hutch, mainly. I just find the show adorable, and it makes me laugh like a dork. :) I love it.

Harry Potter and various novels from the Discworld series for books, Scrubs and Leverage for TV, The Addams Family/Addams Family Values for movies and Final Fantasy XII, Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon and Oblivion/Skyrim for games. I...have a lot of sources for mental and emotional comfort food. Been needing them lately.

I reread Good Omens quite often, sometimes I look through my Harry Potter books...

I rewatch The Big Bang Theory, Top Gear, 8 out of 10 Cats QI and recently Would I Lie To You episodes, and I always watch at least one episode before going to sleep, because it makes my brain shut up enough for me to fall asleep.

I also have an habit of watching everything twice (Television shows) whenever I have the time, not right after each other, but in the span of a week or so, after that I know it by heart and I can put it on whenever and make my brain shut up for a little while, only concentrating on what the next line is.

I used to watch the first PoTC* film a lot a couple of years ago, that is now switched out with a couple of other films, but I don't watch a lot of films that I don't have to watch for school anymore.

*Which reminds me I need to watch those films again, Captain Jack Sparrow is awesome!

Doctor Who, pretty much any British Period Piece Romance, I've got my stock list of Shoujo manga series that I rotate through every couple years to keep them as fresh as much as possible (Glass Mask, Sailor Moon, Fruits Baskets are the super flowery ones I can think of off the top of my head)...

And then soundtrack-wise there's Wicked, Les Miserables, Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, and Phantom of the Opera on the musical side of things. And then a bunch of Doctor Who, Homestuck, Black Beauty, and Amelie on the instrumental side of things. Oh and I create unofficial playlists for my original stories and listen to them sometimes as well...

...they include a lot of Doctor Who, Homestuck, Black Beauty, and Amelie songs.

I've probably answered the same way before - but multiplayer games with friends (ME3, Borderlands 2, Assassin's Creed 3 and the like). If I want to be alone and do something, then I'll probably play like Final Fantasy VI or Persona 3 or something.

When I'm having a really shitty time of it I'll pop in my DVD of 'The Princess Bride' because that movie never fails to make me feel good. Never gets old, either.

I...don't. O.o Not in many years, anyway. I used to re-read the Lord of the Rings like crazy. I sometimes go back and re-read old roleplaying threads or fanfics when I'm feeling bored and blue, though.

Sailor Moon! Always Sailor Moon.

And sometimes random sugary girly manga... like this one I found in a thrift store called Pixie Pop? It was about a girl who accidentally drank some magical drink intended for a fairy and could transform into stuff or gain magic abilities if she drank other stuff. It's just sugary fluffy nonsense, but I love it when I need comfort!

I also love Princess Ai. Unpopular opinion, I know, but I can't bring myself to dislike it at all--it's a fun story, that's all. (For those who don't know: Princess Ai is the Ameri-manga written by Courtney Love, of all people. It's not very well-liked.)

Return of the Jedi. Also, playing Spider Solitaire, which is a) good for the brain and b) easy enough that I almost always win, unlike regular Solitaire which makes me want to throw things sometimes.
