Does anyone just start writing fanfic (and posting it) without ever having written anything before? That seems weird to me. It'd be like inviting people over for a dinner party without ever having turned your stove on or something.

^ that was me, logged out for some reason

I (not OP) did. I'd never written a word of fiction in my life, and my first story got a good number of reviews, subsequent to which I became an MNF in my (then large) fandom.

I'm not sure why that seems strange, as everybody has to start somewhere, and fanfic is easier than original fic for obvious reasons. I'm an avid reader who had written a lot in my head over the years, and just got bitten by the bug one day and decided to share it.

Yeah? I wrote and posted my first fanfic/fiction-anything this year. Everybody has to start somewhere.

Think of it as inviting everyone over for a party because just got a stove and you're turning it on and cooking with everyone

I started writing fic and posting it while in high school. Not that it was good, or that I knew what I was doing, but I was doing it. For a lot of people it's an accessible way to start writing: there's established rules of the universe they're writing in. Of course some people with more experience actually do write fic.

There's NOTHING WRONG with people publishing fic without actually writing anything other than that first. And it's a false equivalency to the dinner party - you can always order food. Have a potluck, get pre-made stuff to stick in the oven.

Everyone starts writing somewhere, and fic is that place for a lot of people.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, just that it surprised me that people did it. I guess because I had been writing for years and years before I ever showed it to anyone? IDK.

People have to start somewhere.

I would assume most people practice on their own before posting for everyone to see. I guess I've always assumed wrong, according to this thread.

I did that.I mostly write ID fic and my rare ship,so it didn't seem like a big thing.

I didn't even know there was fic for Investigation Discovery. I guess there's more to being an ID Addict than I knew.
