DA I think you're underestimating racism and the kind of messages that we internalize.

There have been studies that show POC women typically have lower self esteem and a lot of comes from constantly being shown that beautiful women are "beautiful white women." This doesn't even have to do with foreign attributes, it's just that in the west the media constantly tells us white = beautiful.

Now of course there are going to be people that still consider women not of the society standard beautiful, but there are going to be a lot more people who internalize that message and it will turn into their preferences for attraction.

So to say "I'm not attracted to Asians" or "I'm not attracted to black people" is a bit extreme to me. Because there are gorgeous people in any given race. And the fact that anon earlier said they didn't like "asian eyes" does make me feel like they've internalized some racism.

I really have no intention of holding anon accountable for anything, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible they have internalized some racism. That is more my problem then anything, to brush it off as "you like what you like" can also be dismissive of the real issues that relate to what you like.

And I've seen the same arguments used towards companies and their very narrow advertising/hiring practices, "They're a business, it's not their job to please everyone." and "They're advertising a product, of course they'll go for that type of person!" I wish I was exaggerating but these are the actual arguments I've heard. Those arguments are fine on an individual level but then you go around and look at the whole and realize we live in a very racist society.

We can't solve the big societal problems if we don't look at the small ones too. I'm not calling anon a bad person nor do I want them to punish themselves for their opinion, but I think they should at least take the time to sit down and ask themselves WHY they have a problem with "Asian eyes." I've seen a lot of people take positive steps just by sitting down and challenging the way they themselves think about other people.

Why should the anon be required to analyze why they dislike one particular thing, and not the rest of the dislikes? And then the likes? Why single out that one particular thing to fixate on instead of having to justify every single thought/feeling/action?

I agree, this is mostly your own personal problem, here. I think you should take the time to sit down and ask yourself WHY you feel you need to intervene on the anon's behalf.

I guess my question to you is then- where do we draw the line? If you see how our culture treats race and beauty, then where is the point that we do sit down and ask these questions?

I also think you and anon from above are thinking I am being way more harsh about this then I actually am, I understand racism is a loaded word and no one wants the term to describe them, but that doesn't change the fact that we all have our own prejudices and we internalize a lot that we aren't even aware of. It is completely possible that your preferences tie into where you grew up, who you were surrounded by, and what media you consumed. We are all products of our environment to a certain extent, and if your environment is full of prejudice do you really think you were completely immune?

I am not asking anyone to "interrogate" themselves, simply to, like you said, self reflect. I don't see how that is a bad thing.
