Lateral thinking puzzles!

[personal profile] vethica 2013-07-09 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by Case's riddle thread from a few days ago, I propose a lateral thinking puzzles thread!

I am guessing most of you know what those are, but they're basically a kind of riddle. Someone give an unusual scenario, and you have to guess how/why it happened. You can get more information only by asking yes/no questions. (e: and if you already know one, don't give out the answer! That's poor form. :P)

I'll start with one in the replies!

A man goes into a bar and orders a glass of water. The bartender reaches under the counter, pulls out a pistol, and fires it into the air. The man thanks him and leaves. Why?

I've never heard of "lateral thinking puzzles" before, but... Maybe he had the hiccups?

:( My guess was that it was raining, and so the hole on the ceiling would give the customer far more water than a glass of it.

I don't want the answer to be hiccups :(

Taken from a movie I am planning to watch if I can find it:

There are eight people in a room. Six of them are holding blank pieces of paper. One of them is sitting at the front of the room, and another one is guarding the door. The man at the front of the room gives the following instructions:

"There is no law in this room but our law, and the only rules in here are our rules. There is one question before you, and one answer is required. If you try to communicate with myself or the guard, you will be disqualified. If you spoil your paper, intentionally or accidentally, you will be disqualified. If you choose to leave this room for any reason, you will be disqualified. Any questions?"

What does the successful candidate have to do?

Writes "no" on their paper? That would appear to be the "one question before you, and one answer is required," and they can't communicate with the speaker to respond verbally. Unless writing "no" would count as communicating, in which case, the correct response would be to do nothing. I think.

Not answer the only question that was posed, which is "Any questions?" They must not communicate with the guard or the man at the front, and saying "yes" or "no" count as interacting, so not giving an answer is the right answer.

House numbers. I mean, the numbers that you buy to put on your house to say what your address is.

In one home in Louisiana, there is a sister named Margaret, a brother named Paul and they live with a man they call , "Father John," yet they aren't related by blood or marriage nor are they casual roommates. How can this be?

Keep in mind this takes place years ago. A man is driving down a long road. In the car with him is his son. The road intersects with train tracks and just as they're passing over the railroad crossing the car stalls. Unfortunately for them, a train is coming and before they can do anything the train crashes into them. The man is killed instantly. The son is seriously injured and paramedics rush him to the hospital. Once he's there he goes straight into the operating room. The doctor who is supposed to perform surgery on the boy walks into the room, takes one look at the patient, and says: "I can't operate on him! He's my son!" How is this possible?

Edit: I'm going to dinner and will be back in an hour or two. Sorry!

But ...It always depresses me how often this one stumps people -_-

The only thing that's ever stumped me about this one is why someone "couldn't" operate on their own son. Shouldn't that make them want to save his life even more?

This one is probably a little stupid because I thought of it on my own a few days ago:

Two two-lane streets intersect in a four-way stop. Four cars going in four different directions stop simultaneously at the signs.. All four cars go simultaneously. No accidents happened and no laws were broken. How?
