I'm the complete opposite. I can appreciate fan art even if it's not my fandom, but I have a harder time with fic if there isn't anyone I ship (though I'm a multishipper).

This is me as well, but I'd think it'd be easy to appreciate visual art if it's done well (if we're talking about art you don't like or is not a style you appreciate, then I can understand only being drawn to it if it relates to fandom or ships.)

Fic is more of an investment and I won't read something if there isn't something to draw me in.

Me too. Art I can appreciate from all fandoms, but with fic I like to stick with fandoms I know and ships I like.

Same here. I like art regardless of fandom, but I need something to hook me up if I want to read some fanfic.

Joining the chorus of "me too". Probably because reading fic takes time and I have a horrible attention span. Without the promise of my pairings or at least a few favorite characters being in the spotlight, I can hardly manage to read fic.

Is that unusual? I don't enjoy fanart if it isn't about a character or pairing I like.

I don't hate it but I won't be reblogging.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-11 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't even enjoy fanart of my favorite characters. It has to be of my ship or else it's just "meh."

[Picture is the Enterprise space ship from Star Trek inside a crystal bottle, as decoration.]

I have a hard time enjoying fanart if it's not of my ship.

Is this really that weird? I didn't think most people enjoyed fanart of things they didn't ship?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Good thing I have a lot of ships. I love the Enterprise, The Black Pearl, Serenity, The Normandy and the Millennium Falcon.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are all excellent ship choices, I must say.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-11 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
My favourite's the Vingilot. I'm sure the Eärramë must be very nice too.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a really pretty secret

Yeah, I got nothin' else, really.

That...seems normal?

I know what you mean; I like gen art, but if it's shipping I want my ships.

I think it's pretty normal since a lot of shippy fanart, like fanfic, is made with a receptive audience in mind. I don't usually enjoy art for pairings I have zero emotional investment in. I like gen/character art though, you can just imagine it's your ship :P

I tend to judge based on art first, ship second. My current fandom has a lot of fanart that's not my preferred style, so I'm thrilled to see art I enjoy regardless of the ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
...is that art a shirt? It looks like a shirt. I want that shirt.

And I have a hard time enjoying any fandom stuff if it's not of my ship. Apparently, a lot of other people do, too.

I don't see what's unusual about this. I mean, if I see art of a pairing I dislike and it's well done, I can acknowledge that, but I don't go looking for it or really want to dwell on it. So yea, I get you OP.
blueonblue: (Default)

[personal profile] blueonblue 2013-07-12 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
This doesn't seem unusual. One of the reasons I don't look at fanart is that my ships are either too old or to unpopular to have much.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-12 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I can enjoy good gen art as well as good ship art. Even if it's good art of my NoTP, I still acknowledge it. There's more to fandom than just shipping.
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2013-07-15 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this a problem? Most people wouldn't read fic of a ship they don't like, so what's wrong with not looking at/enjoying art of something you don't ship?

That's a lot of people, OP. As long as you're not a jerk about it nobody's gonna judge for for skipping art of pairs you don't ship.
