Which is funny given how fandom is. You look at BBC's Sherlock and everyone is shipping John and Sherlock together. So, making them both male changes nothing.

Ah, but the difference is not in fandom but in canon: A lot of people were very wary that Watson was only genderswapped for Elementary so they had an easier time setting them up as a canon romance in the series. Fandom ships regardless of canon; impressively demonstrated in the Clint/Coulson ship.
