This is tough because some people can't look past genre (my dad, for example, loves a good story but he can't deal with anything "unrealistic" so almost all sci-fi and fantasy is right out...never mind that a lot of non-sci fi is unrealistic, too, but whatever!).

I'd say Band of Brothers. Great characters, great action, great production values, emotionally affecting, you learn history, and it's only 10 episodes with no filler.

I just did so many Band of Brothers gifsets! So +1!
