god, fuck you, tumblr

(Anonymous) 2013-07-12 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
It used to be so nice, just searching tumblr as an anonymous little lurker. Look at all the pretty picspams!

Then they got a little annoying. "JOIN TUMBLR!" said all the popups. But it was a minor annoyance. I could still get to the picspams.

Now? Not anymore. Tumblr said, "Fuck you, anonymous little lurker," and now to see more than 20 results of a search on fuckr I have to make a stupid fucking tumblr.

I don't want to make a fucking tumblr account. It is a matter of principle. Fuck you, tumblr. Fuck. You.

it's not exactly unreasonable for a site to want you to, you know, actually have a (free) account with them in order for you to see their full content. stop being ridiculous

Yes. A free account. That tumblr gets no money from anyway. So why are they forcing users to make a free account to see free content? It's idiotic, and it just makes them look like they're trying to pad their user count and sell your information to advertisers.

That said, I'm not against making an account on a site to see the content posted there when that's been the policy all along. I'm peeved that tumblr decided to change its policy on this when there is no logical reason for them to have done so.

Stop being condescending.

You do know they make money off advertising, right?

It sucks and may seem stupid, yeah, but Tumblr is a SERVICE. Forcing folks to join is their attempt to hook more participation and the like.

Joining the chorus of people who think you're kind of overreacting here, but...

Instead of bookmarking the tags you're interested in, try bookmarking the tumblrs of people who frequently post to your tags. You can even bookmark in such a way that you only see their posts in that tag (ie exampleuser.tumblr.com/tagged/exampletag). You'll sometimes have to deal with people's inexplicably awful taste in layouts, but if you can't be bothered to create a totally empty account in order to have your own dashboard, that's the price you pay. LJ/DW operate on the same principle, after all- no account, no flist.
