I feel like the biggest creeper right now.

A couple months back, I met "Jane". We hit it off and now we're good friends. Jane has a girlfriend, who I've only met a couple times, but she seems nice and everything. The other day, I had a dream where I was being hunted down by a killer and had to figure out who it was. It turned out it was a game (albeit a scary one), and it ended when I guessed that it was a guy named Marty, who had a pitchfork. The person running the game told me that it was actually a girl named Kathleen, and showed me a picture of her. I thought it was a bit weird that she wasn't cartoony-looking like everyone else there; it just looked like a woman's Facebook photo, as seen on Timeline where it's really small.

A few days later, I realized...Kathleen was Jane's girlfriend. I didn't use the dream killer's real name here, because it's the same name as hers. And the tiny picture was her actual Facebook picture. And if that's not bad enough, another part of the dream centered around trying to win Jane's attention over something I was proud of, wanting her to be proud of me as well.

I don't believe that dreams really mean anything, but things like this make me overly paranoid that deep down, I'm a psycho stalker jealously demonizing Kathleen because I idolize Jane and want her to myself. And I really, really don't want any of that to be true. I've got nothing against Kathleen, and I like Jane in a completely healthy way...right? Someone please, reassure me that dreams are just dreams, and sometimes they go all "Ron The Death Eater" on people for no reason, and that that doesn't mean I actually feel that way. :/ Please?

Dreams are just dreams. Sometimes they go all "Ron The Death Eater" on people for no reason. That doesn't mean you actually feel that way.

You had a dream. It's almost certainly nothing to worry about. Weird dreams don't make you a creeper or a bad person. Actions do.

I'm no expert, but I think dreams are just dreams, and as long as you don't wake up thinking, "I hope she's a serial killer in real life so Jane will date me," it doesn't mean anything bad about you.

You're okay. Dreams twist the truth. They aren't the truth. You were thinking about Jane and she entered your dream in a strange way. You may have gotten a vibe that she was concerned about something Kathleen did or said and your dream made it worse.

You are not a psycho stalker. You processed your emotions in your dream. That's normal.

(Is Jane worried about Kathleen's actions in any way? Maybe Kathleen said something unkind to Jane and that's what you were processing.)

Sometimes random people just show up in your dreams, I highly doubt your brain's letting you in on some secret.

So long as you aren't acting like a psycho stalker in real life, your fine.

Sometimes brains do weird shit. Sometimes dreams mean something, sometimes they don't. And even when they do mean something, it's often not as clear-cut as you think they are.

If you don't feel that the dream is being a mirror to your soul, then odds are good that it's not. You just had a weird dream. Laugh it off and move on.

It doesn't mean anything, anon. You're just thinking about your friends, and they got into a bad dream.

Last night I dreamed I was at my old elementary school and a teacher handed adult-me the roll sheet to take to the office... and a loaded handgun for protection. And when I went outside, there were police snipers outside and they told me to go to the library. Then I woke up. It doesn't mean anything bad about the school, I'd been thinking of the teacher recently, and the snipers are out of a movie I just watched.

Fun Fact: Every person you see in a dream is someone you have seen in real life.

Less Fun Fact: I am prone to horrible nightmares (meaning all I have is nightmares, every night). Believe me when I say that nightmares don't really mean anything in the real world (except maybe stress or PTSD). If they did, the world would be zombies or everyone I know would be trying to kill me (or I would be finding more dead bodies than the people in the Law and Order universe).

Is that really true? I'd never heard that before, but that's really interesting.

Mmmm. It is speculation. Anything about dreams is hard to peg down as 100% true because of how limited we are in researching dreams. However, congenital blindness suggests that the brain can't construct what it hasn't seen without some visual experience as a reference.

You probably watched something, or read something, or overheard something, and forgot. Dreams do not mean anything. They're just random bits your mind hallucinates while its powered down

Subconsciously maybe your mind is looking for a reason to dislike Kathleen so you feel better about liking Jane. Just ignore it and realize it's just a dream and that there are 7 billion people out there in the world for you to find someone even better than Jane. It'll be alright, OP.

Freud said that the people in your dream, rather than representing your feelings toward their real-life counterparts, are aspects of yourself. So the Freudian way of interpreting your dream is to think of what part of yourself that dream-Jane and dream-Kathleen represent.

Thanks for all your responses. I really do feel better now. :)

As for that small superstitious/paranoid part of me that does believe dreams can have meaning, I've decided that maybe "Kathleen" being antagonistic in my dream represents my worries about how she feels towards me, rather than anything to do with how I feel towards her. It's an unknown variable, and my brain just loves to run wild with those.

I understand. I once had a very negative dream in which someone I'd been getting along with irl was horrible to me, then a month later, she screwed me over in a manner similar to the way she had in the dream. I don't think dreams should be taken at face value, but they definitely have meaning.
