No no no no no no no do not do that to yourself, do not play Planescape Torment, the late 90s wave of cRPGs had a lot of overrated garbage but that one takes the cake. Horrible game. It may actually be the worst game I've ever played.

If you must play an Infinity Engine game go with Baldur's Gate. I personally don't care for the BG series because generic D&D blah blah and also I hate the Infinity Engine. It may be generic, it may be the first in Bioware's long history of reusing the same plot, but it's not BAD.

Planescape Torment is bad. It's a load of overwrought melodramatic self-indulgent wash too wrapped up in its CREEPYCOOLDARK fantasy freakshow setting and its own breathless obsession with detail to be anything actually well written, with truly excruciating gameplay mechanics that suck out any remaining fun the game might've had. It's very, very 90s in the worst way and it shows.

Meanwhile, I tried the Fallout series and gave up in the middle of the first game because it bored me- so that's one commenter for and one against for each. Incidentally, the games shared some of the same development people.

I recommend going for both if you can easily afford it, otherwise pick whichever sounds more like something you'd be interested in.

I'm not saying DT is WRONG about Planescape but his views are certainly kind of an outlier. So it might be worth giving the game a try.
