GC is cheaper than therapy

(Anonymous) 2013-07-13 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I told my sister about my trichotillomania. It just came out in conversation. We were talking about personal grooming, and I just thought "What the hell, go for it." She was really cool about it. She asked some questions, and I explained some things, and it wasn't anything uncomfortable at all. The next day, business as usual.

I don't feel better, but I don't feel any worse for having done it. She's the first person I've told outside of anonymous internet confessions such as this one... I don't think I'm going to go around telling everyone now, but it's good to have it out there somewhere, I guess.

Thanks. And no, I don't mind.

When it first started, it was mainly one spot on my head that I was able to brush my hair over, and one leg. I never wore short pants or skirts, so that was easy to hide. As I got older (I've been doing this for about 17 or 18 years), I pretty much pulled from every possible location, including eyelashes and pubes. I always figured someone in my family would notice and call me on it, but no one ever did so I was lucky or unlucky in that regard, depending how you look at it.

Lately I've been trying to limit myself to one or two spots again. I had the idea that I could try to focus on my eyebrows, since that seems to be the socially acceptable form of trich, and it was my sister's commenting on my plucked eyebrows that got the whole thing started.

I keep the hair on my head really, really short now so it's not as easy to pull from there. Aside from eyebrows, it's mostly spots under clothing now. I don't do it unconsciously as much as I used to. It's usually when I'm bored or stressed out these days.

that sounds like progress, actually, it seems that you're gaining control over it if you're mostly relapsing when bored and stressed and not just unconsciously

although I'm guessing that therapy helps, it's not impossible to fight this sort of thing on your own, it just takes a lot of mental hoops and tricks and building up the belief that you can stop (or better and more effective yet, never start, stop that wandering hand!)
