I like the rigid roles, the more passive one bottoming. It's more realistic to what I've experienced both in having and discussing sex. But I also like seeing switching thrown in because that's a real thing that does happen, it just isn't as common as some fandoms make it out to be.

As a reader, I enjoy seeing the more passive one as the top when it's written more as character study/meta. Show me the psychology of why the more aggressive one is a bottom and I will read that fic over and over and over.

I've had the opposite experience, I guess. Switching has been much more common in my relationships/sexual experience and maybe that's why I prefer it in my fic as well. But I'll read exclusively top/bottom and even if that carries over into the top being more dominate and the bottom being more submissive if those choices are actually born out of characterization and not just shoved in there because 'that's the way tops and bottoms are', etc. Hell, I'll read anything if it's born out of good characterization.

"Hell, I'll read anything if it's born out of good characterization." I'm the exact same way :) I prefer character driven everything and fic is just another way for me to get that. I also want at least some plot and I often like reading smut, but characterization is the most important thing for me.
