People in Oregon?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-13 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello everyone! :) I graduated from college a few years back and I've decided I hate my state, so I was considering moving once I finish my internship up and become licensed. Among my top choices was Oregon, but I've only been there once, and that was just passing through.

So, people in Oregon or people who've visited Oregon, what are the good and bad parts of the state?

The west side is good, the east side is bad.

Sweet and simple, I like it. :) Noted.

Licensed in what, exactly? That might make a difference in recommendations :-)

Civil Engineering. In most states, you have to work four years with a professional engineer before you're allowed to take the PE and become a license engineer. :)

I have lived in Oregon most of my life. If politics are a motivator for you, everything inside the Willamette Valley is very very liberal, and everything outside of the Willamette Valley is very very conservative.

From about October to May/June, Oregon is very grey and rainy. You have to be okay with the long term dark, gloomy, or grey. Many Californians I have made friends with had to move back because they couldn't take the weather. On the plus side, the winters are fairly mild, and the summers/early autumn is the most beautiful time of year.

Even though Portland is more expensive than the other cities in Oregon, I would recommend living there because the public transportation is awesome. If you find a decent spot to live, you will barely have to drive. If you live in any other of the "big" cities (Eugene, Salem, Corvallis, Bend) you will definitely need to own a car. However my favorite city is Eugene.

My favorite thing about Oregon is the availability of outdoor activities. When I lived there, I would go hiking almost every single day. During the summer I could go kayaking, and during the winter, skiing. Just about every outdoor activity is available and pretty accessible. For that reason alone, I hope to eventually move back to Oregon.

I hope that helps :)

That does help, thank you. :) Based on what you've provided, it looks like exactly my kind of place, so I'll do some more research and keep an eye on the news for a few more years and make my decision.

Thank you again!

Not OP, but thank you! I love the west coast and have considered immigrating there once I have my Master's and more solid work experience (from about the San Francisco bay area up to Victoria or so, not so much SoCal), and Portland is on my list of cities to look at. The only thing that might be a downer is the weather.

The worst part is getting to Oregon. I recommend starting with no food but all the bullets you can afford.

All I really know is that Oregon is the prettiest state I have ever been to, and I've been to most of them. The western part is where all the people are, and the eastern part is where all the mountains are. It's also kind of expensive. But that's okay, because it's SO DAMN PRETTY.

If I may ask, what is your state and why do you hate it? Honest curiosity.

I have only visited Oregon once, and it was Portland, but it was a lot of fun. I like the culture there, and the beach is very pretty. As a whole I think it is too cold and gray for me, but that's definitely a personal thing - I've always been really sensitive to both cold temperatures and lack of sunlight.

Wyoming. My favorite thing about the place is the weather, although I do wish it could be a little wetter. It's such a good ol' boys club, though, and so sparsely populated that most of my preferred luxuries aren't an option. I want a place that's more in keeping with my views, isn't too hot, and has a strong cultural presence. :)

I'm guessing it's just more of an old-fashioned rural conservative culture? Yeah I wouldn't like that either.

I would also hate the weather hahaha but if you want a place that's "not too hot" you'd like Oregon. If you get hot very easily, you'd like it and your thermostat is very different from mine xD I kind of want to move to Central America or something, that is how much I hate being cold
