Your definition of fat sounds like obese, though.

Not necessarily. Obesity is defined as having a 30.0+ BMI. I'm at the high end of overweight now, but I've been obese in the past at 5'6" and ~195 lbs. I've also always had a slim waist relative to my bust and hips; no one but the most hypercritical and fat-phobic of observers would describe me as "big and round." Part of that's due to my having a decent amount of muscle, but I have quite a lot of fat, too; I'm definitely not an elite athlete miscategorized as obese because of an unusually high percentage of muscle. Otoh, my physical capabilities, healthy waist:hip ratio, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, etc. definitely don't fit popular conceptions of obesity/overweight, any more than my appearance does.

TL;DR, the current model for measuring overweight and obesity is imprecise for a lot of people, including me, and obesity/overweight doesn't always look or function the way you think it does.

Not all obese people have "so much body fat that they've lost all shape and are just really big and round." But if you were to find someone who fits that description, they're almost certainly obese, which is the point I was making. I have pretty much had it with the number-based definitions myself.

AYRT

But if you were to find someone who fits that description, they're almost certainly obese, which is the point I was making.

True enough. Personally, I've reached the point where all of the public handwringing, moral panic, and concern trolling about the "obesity epidemic" have made me angry about the very terms "overweight" and "obese." As long as they're in use, I figure the best I can do to counter the toxic public messages relating to health and body size is to proclaim whenever the topic comes up, "This is also what obesity looks like."

Which isn't at all intended as criticism of you for not doing the same! But the person you were responding to seemed genuinely confused about these definitions (for good reason; they're stupid definitions), and I thought it worthwhile to complicate the discussion a little with an alternate viewpoint.

BMI is pretty much bullshit. I wish it would drop off the face of the planet.
