have you seen it? What did you think?

I saw it last night in 2D and I'm wondering if I should go again for 3D, or if it's too dark-- since so much of the movie takes place at night/in the rain.

Anyway I thought it was pretty awesome, but apparently it's flopping and that's really sad :(

...it's flopping? I hadn't heard that.

I'm going to see it tomorrow, as are most of the people I know, so maybe it just wasn't the movie everyone decided to see on Friday night?

yeah, its weekend projection is now less than 40mil or something? Which isn't good given its budget :\

Haven't seen it but have heard nothing but positive reviews. A lot of people seem to be raving about this film - so much so in my little corner of the internet that I thought it was a summer hit. Had no idea it was flopping.

yeah it's apparently now predicted to come in third for the weekend, after Grown ups and Despicable me 2, and the only way it can earn back its budget is overseas. I hate that this kind of thing is called within hours of a movie opening... so maybe it will end up doing better than they predict.

:( Maybe it'll surprise people? IDK. Might not make as much as first expected but I hope it does better than people are predicting right now.

I'm not sure if I'm going to see it in theaters, I might wait and rent it. Maybe I should since it isn't doing too well but I've never had any particular interest in it. (Which I don't even understand myself, tbh. I love giant robots, GLaDOS, Idris Elba...) I don't want it to flop though.

Everyone on my twitter feed is raving about it, so at least from what I'm seeing it's been well received by viewers.

yeah I'm hoping it'll be a sleeper, because movies that aren't a sequel/remake/adaptation are so rare. And it's a good movie! It just pisses me off that it's being crushed by something like Grownups 2.

I feel you on that one. I wouldn't see that movie for free.

Yeah, well, I think Grownups 2 can be explained perfectly through the ratings on Rotten Tomato.

Critic rating: 7% (so super, super rotten)

By which I mean the people who see Grownups 2 don't care if it's an awful movie, and the fact that Pacific Rim is a good movie probably actually works against it.

I went to see it today and I enjoyed myself. Sure there are some plot holes and the acting is a little spotty in places(though Idris Elba was amazing as he always is) but the designs of the Kaiju and the Jaeger were damn impressive. I also liked a large portion of the characters which I wasn't expecting, and I want to know more about the other Jaeger teams because they all seemed cool.

I worry so much that it wont make back it's budget, I'd love to see like a prequel where the Kaiju first show up and how that goes down but the fact that it apparently isn't doing well is so disheartening. And it's being beat by a stupid Adam Sandler movie which makes it worse.

yeah a lot of people who have seen it want a prequel (myself included) so I hope it does well, but unless it's huge overseas it probably won't make enough to earn another movie :\

but yeah, the plot and acting aren't 100%... but I went for the mecha and monsters and it delivers those in spades!

Gosh that is so sad to hear, internet feelings towards it are so positive that I thought it was doing okay at least.

I was lovingly picking at some of the plot holes after I had seen it but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie and I certainly didn't feel like I had wasted time watching it. I'm not even a big mecha person but damn those robots were really, really cool.

it's making a huge splash online and among nerdy types, which *could* equal a sleeper hit. We've done it before. I hope it works this time too. I was just reading an article that posits that Hollywood itself is actively blackmailing the movie because it doesn't fit inside their model, which is a little cloak-and-dagger for my tastes but honestly, with all the articles about how it *might* be a flop and *might* be "this year's Battleship", it makes me wonder.

I meant to start a similar thread earlier but got caught up in work...

I saw a pre-screening earlier in the week. I thought it was fantastic, great action - REALLY great action, for that matter - and a plot that you shouldn't expect too much out of. It's so much fun and it makes me sad it's falling below expectations at the box office. :( However I've heard nothing but good things from others who've seen it and I'm really hoping word of mouth helps it out. (I've been talking about it here and there on Twitter and tumblr myself).

I saw it in iMax 3D btw and it was worth it. And I'm one of those people who finds 3D overrated, normally. Plus, it sounds like the movie could use your $! I'm going to see it again since the screening didn't cost me. :p

I'm glad to hear it was worth it in 3D! I'm taking my mom, who has a hard time seeing if the picture is too dark, so I was worried about that. We'll see it either way, it's just choosing 2D or 3D :)

I haven't seen much about it on tumblr tbh... I've been spamming on there about it though lol

I wanna see it sooooo bad, half my Twitter feed is orgasming over how great it is and I'm burning with jealousy.

I hope it does better than expected, the fact that it's getting beaten by Grownups 2 is just... I don't wanna live on this planet anymore. :'(

do you live in a market where it's not released yet? Don't let it get overhyped for you though, that never ends well!

No, I'm in the US, it's just really difficult for a trucker to see movies near the release date. There generally aren't many movie theaters in industrial parks, you know? XD I have to wait till the next time I'm home.

I enjoyed it. It was one of the few movies that almost made me want to try out Imax. I'm sure I'd have mark 4 a headache though.

I've been waiting ALL YEAR FOR this. I wasn't disappointed at all. At a fan of Mech and monster movie, this is such a wonderful little love letter to both. Seriously, this is a movie I am willing to pay to see again several times. Also, get the dvd
