before reading the book, my elementary school took us to see a local production in a theater, where jim was actually a girl crossdressing (she was conflicted about lying to her new friends, the pirates, but had so much fun with them) but then lost their friendship when they discovered her gender

it was awesome and sad

then years later i read the book and was disappointed
