Being in shape is not the same thing as being thin or losing weight.

That said, my only successful long-term weight loss was last summer, when I was studying for the bar exam. I was being very careful of what I ate because a bad diet affected my concentration, and swimming/going to the gym a lot to relieve stress. I lost 35lbs in two months, and I've kept the weight off for a year.

What everyone else is saying is true: it's a lifestyle change, not a crash diet. Cut refined sugars like sodas, but don't replace it with artificial sweeteners - studies are starting to show a correlation between the artificial sweeteners and overcompensating by eating more later. Eat less processed foods if you can - the less processing there is on a food, the more nutrition you get out of it and the less of it you want to eat. Get in whatever physical activity you can and are comfortable doing. Swimming's my favorite because it works everything all at once, but I also spend time on the elliptical machine and in the weight room to build some muscle.

Good luck, OP.
