I am seconding the people who say "track everything" and "think of it as a lifestyle change instead of going on a short-term diet". I successfully lost weight in 2012 by religiously tracking calories of everything I ate and drank. (Had I exercised frequently, instead of just power-walking on the treadmill a few times a week, I would have tracked that too.)

I would also recommend looking at this online book. The book itself doesn't have any big revelations in it, but the way it presents the information made me re-think how I looked at food, especially when it came to dieting. I said "This sounds simple enough. I can do this!" And then I did it.
