Which is exactly the reason they should have charged him with manslaughter. There wasn't enough evidence to convict for murder 2. The jury had no choice but to determine guilty or not guilty of murder 2; they can't come back and say "Well, he's guilty of this thing you didn't charge him with instead." The prosecutor is the one who fucked this all up and actually knew it at the time, but it was easier to go with the higher charge knowing he'd skate and put the blame on the jury instead of looking soft by going with the charge they could actually convict on.

Except it sounds like the jury had the option to find him guilty of manslaughter? I really wish they'd done that.

No. Manslaughter in Florida requires the killing have no legal reason. Self defense is a legal reason, and the prosecution could not prove that he was not acting in self defense. If you have reasonable doubt, you have to find not guilty. That's only fair. If you're angry about that, you have to change the law itself, not go after the guy who got away with pitchforks.
