I was one of the 600 pound people you see on those shows on TLC. I've lost down to 325 and still working down because you have two choices, really, when you're a true food addict.

You eat those oh-so-careful diets that let you eat anything you want, really, just as long as you can manage on tiny portions and not lose your mind in between meals. Cos most fad diets are crap. You either do strict portion control OR

(what I ended up doing totally by accident cos I felt like crap and was looking for a decent cleanse diet) - You limit the *types* of food you eat to high-fiber, high-nutrient, lower calorie items and only those types but you don't portion control or watch the calories.

In my case I had already lost almost 100 of my 600 pounds slowly and painfully over 3 years with strict portion control and giving up sugar and many other things I enjoy. Because of diabetes, not for weight loss, the weight loss was purely gravy.

So I said to hell with it and tried the cleanse diet. It asked me to give up sugar- already done that. The other rules- no wheat (or similar grains high in gluten like millet and barley), no gluten, no soy, no eggs, no dairy, no beef or similar meats, no pork (only allowable proteins are seafood and chicken, and preferably only in small quantities). (Exception on the soy- use tamari soy sauce, very low in gluten).

After about the first month you can handle a tiny bit of eggs to see if you can have them as an occasional alternate protein or for non-gluten baking. By the time you've been eating this way a month, you'll be naturally eating less, and even if you binge you won't destroy yourself. And don't weigh more than once every couple of weeks. You drive yourself to stress by weighing all the time.

In my case I also generally avoid potatoes except as a very occasional treat as they aggravate my arthritis. Still leaves me with rice, corn, beans, oats, cornmeal, buckwheat, quinoa, and all sorts of lovely alternate grains like tapioca, amaranth, and many others. Different types of incomplete vegetable proteins will help to form complete proteins. I have all the vegetables, all the fruits, and poultry and seafood and plenty for proteins if I want meat. I do use eggs now on occasion, sparingly, mostly for binding or baking. I've also got the nuts and seeds for protein and to help with snacking.

I keep nuts, dried fruit, and gluten free crackers around for snacking. As an addict this way of eating lets me know that anytime I want I can go eat. And I can eat whatever it is until my belly is full. I'm no good with deprivation, I HATE portion control, I could not live the rest of my life that way.

And to really keep it off, that's what you have to do. You have to find something where you can honestly answer, yes, I could live the rest of my life both safely and comfortably on this eating program.

I should add I'm bedbound disabled. My knee joints froze in a bent position about 5 years ago. So this is pretty much diet alone, I can't supplement with much exercise. I'm working to get down to a reasonable living weight both for my health and so that perhaps I can get knee joint replacement surgery and walk again.
