MyFitnessPal!
(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)I know what you mean about wanting to lose weight and be healthier. I have been overweight pretty much all of my life, and I struggled with my self-image because of it.
I'm going into my second year of med school, and this summer I did a placement with a family doctor. She showed me an iPad or iPhone app that she recommends to her patients who want to lose weight called MyFitnessPal.
I started the first week of June, and I have lost almost 25 lbs since then. I have gone from a size XL to a medium, and I feel so much healthier and better about myself.
All it does is keep track of the calories you eat, as well as fat, carbs, sugar, sodium, protein, etc. You tell it how much you weigh and so on, and it tells you exactly how much you can eat if you want to lose one pound a week, or say half a pound a week. I used to feel guilty about all the junk food I eat. But now I ask my fitness pal if I can have something, and if it says no, I can either exercise to "earn" it, or I wait for another day when I do have room in my calorie count. I'm so much more aware now of what I put in my mouth, and even on the days I can't enter all my food into the app, I still lose weight because now I know what a healthy meal looks like.
Anyway, I know this is an older secret post, and you have been getting lots of good advice from other people, too. The cutting out drinks thing is especially valuable. When I see that a glass of OJ is 110 calories, I think, or I could have some crackers! Or a granola bar! Or a huge bowl of strawberries! And I have that instead, so I'm not drinking away all my calorie allowance for the day.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Losing weight is not easy, but so worth it to feel better about yourself, and also the many health reasons like avoiding diabetes and heart disease!
