Yeah, sounds similar to stories an ex from Singapore used to tell, so my money'd be on SE/E Asia.

I read something similar, but in Taiwan. The Haunting Fetus is a pretty good, interesting read.

Personal opinion, but I think it might be a Toyol or Kwee Kia (Devil's Child).

Ah, ok.

There's a dude on the Web who's reviewed some East Asian horror films, including Toyol, about... well, a toyol, and Mystics in Bali, which is about a Penanggalan, a type of Indonesian vampire.

Oh, cool.

Of note, Penanggalan are also a thing in Malay folklore too, although I mostly heard about it through Russel Lee's True Singapore Ghost Stories which I was a big fan when I was younger. I suggest you check it out if you want to see some cross-cultural hauntings and supernatural information.
