In this fandom, there's a loud section - disproportionately large for the active fandom, but certainly not representative of the entire fandom - who behave like this. It's also a culture that perpetuates itself. But the members of the fandom who act like that are all douches going into it, I'd guess. They just gravitate towards a fandom that has a sub-fandom that allows them to wear their douchiness openly and be lauded for it. :|

The problem, I think, is the subset of 4chan that became the /b/ronies that have poisioned the term for so many. Comprised largely of /b/ and /v/, they are the same guys that make comics shops a no-woman's land and who make any FPS with audio chat go bad when a grrrrl shows up(I won't pretend /co/ has none, but I honestly believe we have less. We demanded the creation of /mlp/ for a reason. Though sadly a lot of us are more the other guy who's uncomfortable but doesn't actually say anything). These are the guys angry at all women, for slights real or imaginary. And like many shitty people in subgroups, where they feel safe, they get nasty and completely miss the irony.

In short, these guys would have shit up any fandom ever. And they all found each other here and got emboldened.
