I knew this nasty guy who hated believers - he was as intolerant towards anyone of faith as many people are towards atheists. He used to quote this all the time, and I always wonder if he ever figured out John Milton wasn't on his side.

you would think the fact that the quote comes from the actual fucking Satan might have tipped him off, but hey

(actually tbf there's a fairly lengthy history of reading Paradise Lost in that way, where Satan is a sympathetic and even an attractive character, of taking his side in the whole thing, going back to the romantics - but your friend sounds like he's just a goober)

Yeah, I don't give him that much credit. :/ It could be that I should, I think he was somewhat well read so it may be, but I think he was just an idiot who heard the quote and made it his life philosophy.

Guy sounds like a militant atheist, and well. Most people who are that don't seem to realize it, sadly.

Yeah, he was pretty narrow minded and had a million chips on his shoulder.

One thing I've noted though is they are more likely to give you "real life experiences" and not just the ones online. I was in a beautiful chapel with chard of some reknown, and some surly "so deep" teenager was leaving after apparently a glance because "religion has caused all wars"

It's a beautiful chapel dude. You can still think it's pretty irregardless of beliefs I doubt you could actually pull up any good citations for anyway.

I...will admit here, I'm slightly biased when it comes to people like that because I do believe in a religion, and it usually ends badly once they find out*, but it just seems...silly to be so militantly against something like that - particularly when they usually don't seem to know a whole lot about it as a thing, instead of what extremist fringe groups have said it is.

*generally because 'Hey, can you not bash -religion- while I'm around' doesn't ever seem to go over well with them.

Montreal is pretty neato in general, so I'd say go for it.

Damn. I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I scrolled down, but that is one magnificent chapel.

Probably some trolling? But nope, not here. I just legit think that place is pretty and that you can find it so regardless of religious beliefs or lack thereof. It's much better in person, I assure you.

I'm an atheist and I still can appreciate the craftsmanship of that place. Dismissing it like that idiotic teenager (redundant, I know) is very petty indeed.

Blame William Blake for all that "of the Devil's Party without knowing it." No but seriously, doesn't the mention of 'hell' and 'heaven' somehow imply belief in god anyway?

I don't think your friend was very smart. You're better off without him.

Thankfully, not a friend; this was someone on a forum I went to so I kind of had to interact with him, because I loved the forum itself. He's not even there anymore, people were getting tired of him and in the end I think he either got kicked off or realized he wasn't making himself welcome anymore.

Good riddance to him then.
