That's so weird, because I always think that ficwriters who think that anything without a firm basis in canon (as in, was explicitly stated within the source material or given as Word of God) is the One True Way of writing a character have an extremely poor grasp of characterization too!

Funny how that works, eh?

I'm pretty much thinking this. If something with absolutely zero canon reference is what you tout as a make-or-break deal...you're completely warping how important that trait is to their characterization, and that's pretty sucky to me.
