That's so weird, because I always think that ficwriters who think that anything without a firm basis in canon (as in, was explicitly stated within the source material or given as Word of God) is the One True Way of writing a character have an extremely poor grasp of characterization too!

i know nothing about this character/fandom but... i think i wouldn't have chafed as much at this secret if it was "not liking guys" rather than "liking girls." i guess i can understand really strongly believing that a character is non-straight, but i don't understand the insistence that a (usually male) character MUST be exclusively attracted to the same sex if it's not at least strongly suggested in canon (through dialogue or implication, not just ~~*~*~subtext~*~*~~) or word of god. idk man. it just comes off like you're only in it for TEH GAY!!!!! and don't want icky women near your perfect GAYS!!!!

I'm normally pretty accepting of other people's headcanons. Ship and let ship, Your kink Is Not My Kink And That's Okay, etc. etc. etc. ... People have different interpretations of shit, and that's cool...

But if you write or have ever written this guy as liking girls? I won't read any of your fics because I assume you have an extremely poor grasp of characterization. I don't deny your right to write him (or anybody else) the way you want, I just don't agree with you and believe it reflects poorly on your skills as a writer.

It has to do with character interpretation, and frankly, that can be done beautifully in any number of ways simply by being done well.

SO this gaydar thing and characters from Japanese games/anime etc... is pretty much bullshit. It's actually funny how often male character who are set up as the most extreme, totally straight lady killers are perceived as gay in the western fandom. Whether a character sets your gaydar a-ringing or not really isn't an indicator for his sexuality.
