I'm not sure that's homophobic, tbh. If it had been a 17 year old girl who was being followed, no one would have doubted the 'is he going to rape me' reasoning.

You mean the kid thinking the guy following him was a cop, then when he realized he wasn't thinking he was a rapist? I think if someone is following you around at night, you might want to entertain the idea that you might not be safe.

Seriously, if he'd been a girl, the assessment that "This man following me might try to rape me" would not have been an unreasonable fear. It doesn't mean that she believed all men are rapists, just like how it wouldn't mean martin thought that all gays are rapists.

In this hypothetical scenario, Zimmerman isn't being painted as a GAY rapist, he's a rapist. being a man afraid of being raped does not make you homophobic, anymore than being a woman being afraid of rape makes you a misandrist.

The problem with what you're saying is that it completely ignores how rape culture works, at least in the western world, and the fact that making accusations like this [along with pedophilia etc] is something that people who are homophobic traditionally do to argue that homosexuality is ~wrong~ and ~bad~.

But Jeantel specifically says "Any boys/men who are not -that way-". She brought homosexuality into it.

It would have been unreasonable if the hypothetical girl then flipped out and attacked a dude.

I don't expect much more out of a nineteen year old kind of slow kid but it's still homophobic of her to think a Gay Panic argument is the best way to defend Martin.
