I recommend looking through http://www.freeindiegam.es/ if you don't already know about this site. Most of the games are short but might be what you're looking for if you're tired of impersonal big budget games.

Favorites are:

Ib (http://vgperson.com/games/ib.htm)
Horror RPG with more puzzle elements than RPG elements. Multiple endings. The game's only scary in the things-suddenly-jumping-out-at-you sense and the characters are lovely.

The Witch's House (http://www.vgperson.com/games/witchhouse.htm)
Like the above but less character-driven and with a bit of gore. The true ending makes this game. Some of the puzzles rely on audio.

Yume Nikki (http://yumenikki.wikia.com/wiki/Yume_Nikki_Wiki)
A game where you walk around. I honestly don't get it but I like reading other people's interpretations of the story. Download link is the first image on the right.

Cute and simple game where you collect friends. This game always makes me feel better when I feel lonely/worthless/had a bad day.

Torque (http://www.venbrux.com/freeware.php)
Ridiculously addictive 2D shooter. I've been playing this game on and off for years and I still haven't beat some of the higher levels. Download link is closer to the bottom of the page.
