Indie Game Recs

(Anonymous) 2013-07-16 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
While I love triple A titles, I've been getting more into indie stuff lately since so much triple A seems very same-y to me.

So, any indie games you love, F!S?

FTL - I recommended this to another anon, so if you're the same anon I'm sorry. But it's a really fun game where you're basically the captain of a spaceship and you have to strategize. Very fun.

The Binding of Isaac - I paid $5 for this game about a year and a half ago iirc. Since then it's become one of my most played games ever. SO fun.

Thomas was Alone - an anon mentioned this in the game thread, but this is really good; it actually makes you feel for these blocks while being a fun puzzle platformer.

Dust: An Elysian Tale - the art style is VERY divisive. But if you like it it's a very good looking game made pretty much by one person, and has some fun fighting.

Symphony & Audiosurf - do you want a music game that uses your own music? These are both really fun. Audiosurf is more well known and you basically go down a track based off of your music, but symphony is actually a shooter based off your music. Both are really good.

Dustforce - you clean up dust. It's a platformer of sorts, but it's a lot more fun than it sounds.

Hotline Miami -it's violent and you'll die a lot, but it's a fun game that involves thinking through the situations.

The biggest thing I do is follow the various indie bundles, humble indie bundle being the biggest. I buy nearly every one they sell because it's inexpensive and I get a bunch of great indie games to try. Some aren't as good as others, but it's fun to try a lot of games.

OP

I was actually the person who mentioned Thomas was Alone, lol. It is a pretty great game - though stage 4.9 is driving me a little mad right now. @_@

The sound great - though if you don't mind my asking - what is The Blinding of Issac about?

Lol; I really love that game. There are occasional stages where I get REALLY frustrated with it.

The Binding of Isaac is basically a top down action game similar to the original Zelda games in style (sort of) where Isaac escapes his mom, who was trying to kill him because she thinks she heard the voice of god. However, story's not really all THAT important; it's mostly an action game where you get random upgrades. Each time you play the game dungeon is randomly generated, so each experience is really different. It's a difficult game (I rarely beat it), but so worth it.

The Last Door! http://www.kongregate.com/games/TheGameKitchen/the-last-door-chapter-1-the-letter

It's a point-and-click horror game with a great atmosphere and absolutely beautiful music. The developers have their own website with and enhanced version, but they require you to sign up in order to play it, so I linked this version instead.

tbh, most of the games I've played recently have been flash games of Kongregate I could rec more if anyone's interested

Terraria. Kinda like 2d Minecraft. $2.50 on Steam until tomorrow afternoon, too!

Arcomage, which is a build-your-tower-destroy-opponent's-tower card game. Not technically indie, as it's a shoot-off of a subgame from the Might and Magic series, but indie enough.

Creeper World is really fun, too. I didn't like the sequel quite as much, but it was worth the bundle.

I haven't played it a whole lot, but Mari0 is a fun combination of the original Mario game and Portal.

The only indie game I can think of is Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It's a survival horror game that became quite hit a few years back. To be honest, I only knew of it because of some of the secrets posted here and because of some videos in YouTube.

Horror is not my thing, but if it's yours I think you can check it out.

I've been enjoying Reus, which I got from Steam.

You are the spirit of a barren planet, with 4 giants (ocean, swamp, forest, mountain). You start to rebuild the land, people move in, you place resources that work together to make everything prosperous.

I recommend looking through http://www.freeindiegam.es/ if you don't already know about this site. Most of the games are short but might be what you're looking for if you're tired of impersonal big budget games.

Favorites are:

Ib (http://vgperson.com/games/ib.htm)
Horror RPG with more puzzle elements than RPG elements. Multiple endings. The game's only scary in the things-suddenly-jumping-out-at-you sense and the characters are lovely.

The Witch's House (http://www.vgperson.com/games/witchhouse.htm)
Like the above but less character-driven and with a bit of gore. The true ending makes this game. Some of the puzzles rely on audio.

Yume Nikki (http://yumenikki.wikia.com/wiki/Yume_Nikki_Wiki)
A game where you walk around. I honestly don't get it but I like reading other people's interpretations of the story. Download link is the first image on the right.

.flow (http://yumenikkifg.wikia.com/wiki/.flow)
Plays like the above. Visuals are often gory. Download link is at the bottom of the page.

Candy Ant Princess (http://ratbagbat.tumblr.com/post/43260679899/games-ive-made)
Interactive text adventure where you're the candy ant princess. Plays in browser but can be downloaded.

Icarus (http://www.kongregate.com/games/LinearGames/icarus)
Flash game where you press the space bar to jump/fly.

Tanaka's Friendly Adventure (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=7342.0)
Cute and simple game where you collect friends. This game always makes me feel better when I feel lonely/worthless/had a bad day.

Torque (http://www.venbrux.com/freeware.php)
Ridiculously addictive 2D shooter. I've been playing this game on and off for years and I still haven't beat some of the higher levels. Download link is closer to the bottom of the page.
