They are SO stylish, my gosh. Kaz's glasses and hat and uniform are still the best IMO, but Ocelot is so cool too, and I swear, that ponytail on BB is making me a bit too excited.

And the angssst. There's angst everywhere, even the horses have angst, I can see that. :D

I'm probably also lonely because I can't find anyone anywhere to talk about it. I tried for a bit in here and on lj and tumblr, but there's not much collective involvement. Like, I don't know, communities or groups.

Kaz is honestly one of the more stylish/cool Metal Gear characters. And since this is Metal Gear that's a big damn compliment!

Shh, let's not give the horses angst already. Now I'm thinking of the horses dying and getting sad. :( (It'll probably happen, too...)

LJ isn't the best place to talk about anything anymore tbh. It's pretty empty these days. Tumblr is definitely busier and an easier way to find out what the fanbase is thinking, but as you probably already know, it isn't an ideal forum for communication. Some people manage to make friends and hold conversations with it, but I don't really see how.

Come to GC sometimes! I THINK you already have, but there have been some MG conversations over there too. If you feel like making one go ahead; depending on the day there might not be much of a response, but I know at least a couple people (Er, including myself) that would be interested and happy to chat with you!

Kaz has the best of the 1950s greaser appeal all rolled into one. I feel that with each iteration of the Big Boss saga, the character designs get better and better.

/butting in.

Also echoing the Tumblr sentiments. For most fandoms Tumblr sucks IMO, but I've met a bunch of fun people who like Metal Gear. I can recommend a few if OP is interested?

I know what you mean. The new design, with the Diamond Dogs uniform and that hat and the sunglasses and the leather gloves... It's somehow even better IMO than the PW look. I had no idea I'd say this, but seriously. It's so... COOL. Also the voice has changed so much, but I think the guy is the same, right? Just playing it raspier because it's been 10 years. But yeah, that guy is SO great too, very good voice. :D

Re: op

Actually Kiefer Sutherland plays the voice (and does the motion capture) for Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V. David Hayter has always been the voice of Solid Snake, and has played Big Boss often too (though he didn't voice Big Boss in MGS4).

So he's probably who you're thinking of; Hayter's voice definitely became a lot raspier in recent years (and games), but the official reason that Kojima hired Keifer was because he wanted a trained actor who could fully express himself through his facial expressions. (Hence the motion capture.)

So far I do like Sutherland's voice, though. It's different, but isn't too jarring. It's just that when I think of Snake or Big Boss my mind hears Hayter, so it's a change one has to get used to.

Oh, yes, sorry. I read 'Kaz' instead of 'BB' on your previous comment. I know Kiefer is there for BB, I was commenting on the fact that Kaz's voice also sounds pretty cool, I like the voice actor a lot!

I like KS's voice too better than Hayter. But seriously, I think it was not his fault if he went always too deep and ruined most of the dialogue (at least this is my opinion), because when he uses it well he's actually good. They should have asked him not to go deep like that and it would have been fine, I think. I mean, it's not like he talks like *that* IRL, is it? I don't think any human but Batman sounds like that IRL.

Kaz has the same voice actor, fortunately! Or at least I'm 95% sure he does.

And I love Hayter's voice acting, but in recent years there has been a decline. I'm not sure it's something he can actually help, tbh. Maybe that's just how his voice is changing as he ages and he can't do the same Snake voice. (Which I bet is another reason Hideo changed voice actors.)

UGH THE DIAMOND DOGS JACKET. I hope they make replicas or release really good quality design images so that I can make my own.

They've actually got Kiefer Sutherland as BB now! I'm really glad for the change. I love David Hayter but his time has been up for quite some time now. He'll always be Solid Snake to me, but Big Boss is getting older and going through a change. He needed someone different and Kief is PERFECT. None of my friends believed me when I told them he'd be awesome and that he'd previously done voice acting in some anime before. Now they're all shitting their pants over him and all I can say is I told them so!

Btw, yes, recommend away! :)

Right now, Zadoorknobs is really entertaining. She posts a lot of Peace Walker related stuff and she seems really friendly. 12085 has incredible art and Caruncula posts a bunch of neat fanart she's found too (I think she also posts stuff she's found on Vampy-Vamp too)

That is honestly the best possible way to describe Kaz.

I feel that with each iteration of the Big Boss saga, the character designs get better and better.

Much agreed. This game looks amazing and the characters just keep looking better and better and even though graphics and design have come a long way (especially in recent years), I'm still incredibly impressed by how great everything looks.

[personal profile] thandie 2013-07-18 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he looked good in PW too, but that's because he had the glasses on. Smart move, because eyes were still the weak point at that stage of game developing.

With this new game I was AMAZED at how pretty and lively their eyes look. They are practically real. And I also can see a difference in how their faces move on MGSV, opposed to other equally fantastic recent games: in this one it really looks like they are using an actor for the face, which I know they do for BB (hello Kiefer). But do they do it for Kaz too? Ocelot still looked a bit static, but hey, that's Ocelot, it could even work character-wise. :P

I don't know, I think Kaz looked the best. BB still looks weird in SOME scenes, to the point that people were speculating if they are really two Big Bosses in the game, for some reason.
elaminator: (Metal Gear Solid 3: Ocelot)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-07-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
But do they do it for Kaz too?

I don't think we've heard! And I feel ashamed admitting this but I didn't even notice with Ocelot. (He's one of my favorite characters, too.) They didn't focus on his facial expressions the way they did Big Boss's though, so maybe we just haven't seen the extent of that yet.

to the point that people were speculating if they are really two Big Bosses in the game, for some reason.

All I can say to that is this is Metal Gear fandom, and if they weren't making up incredibly stupid theories then they wouldn't be doing their job. :p But I think in the finale game the graphics will probably be improved and there won't be much inconsistency.
thandie: (Default)

[personal profile] thandie 2013-07-20 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm definitely not worried about the graphics being consistent or not. :) They have reached a point where it's hard to tell apart cutscenes from game play. It's amazing.
chronophage: (Default)

[personal profile] chronophage 2013-07-20 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just happy that everything with the design is so consistent and yet it keeps improving over time. The Boss's sneaking suit is flawless and I didn't really think they'd ever manage to top it, but everything just keeps getting better? I also like how they're able to create characters that look similar or are related to each other and yet still keep them completely different in both design and personality. I'm also really glad that they had BB put his mullet in a ponytail this time. It's just so practical and yet he still gets to keep his iconic bad haircut. Yoji Shinkawa is a really fantastic artist/designer and I really wish he'd release an artbook of his non-Metal Gear works!
Whenever a new game in the series comes out the first thing I'm most excited to see are the original Shinkawa pieces. Wish he'd done more for Rising- I'd love to see him draw Sam!

Kaz is just precious and I just want him to whip out a switchblade comb and do his hair on video codec all the time. He can interrupt me on missions to do that all he wants.

Coming from someone who hasn't played PW yet: tell me he does that for real? :D

No seriously, I can't wait to play PW, I need to know MOAR.

The ponytail is simply fantastic. It's one of those things characters rarely are allowed to do in anything. Having two or more different styles. It's practical and it makes him look like a badass.

I didn't play Rising but I watched some of the cutscenes on YT. I think Sam could have easily become my favorite.
chronophage: (ooh mr maltese ooh)

[personal profile] chronophage 2013-07-22 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
HE DOESN'T. I'm so sad.

I just started playing it about a week ago. I'd had HD collection sitting around forever but I'd been too busy to play. I wish the codecs were more like they were in previous games (now you just kind of hit a button and people will talk at you. And Kaz tends to call you up at the beginning of a mission and worry about you) but you also get really adorable briefing files for each mission so it kind of evens out, I guess.

Sam is perfect. Everyone in Rising is great but Sam is just flawless. (Rising is also a really great game. Platinum does action games best!)

What is GC? I tried googling but I couldn't find anything. Does it stand for Game...?

LJ is a mess, I agree. I don't know much about DW. I don't know, would a dedicated website help? I have no idea where people who are into game fandoms talk, lol.

Tumblr is fun, but yes, I have no idea how that Ask things work. I mean, it doesn't really encourage forum talk.
elaminator: (Metal Gear Rising: Raiden (close-up))

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-07-18 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I should've pointed that out! GC stands for general comments, which is page two of the posts here on fandom!secrets. It's where people have discussions and such. Anyone can post what they want and people often talk about games over there, so if you ever want to talk about Metal Gear you have the option. We've had a few good discussions about it there, actually. And somewhat recently too!

I have no idea where people who are into game fandoms talk, lol.

Mostly at forums these days, or at least that's what it seems like to me. Again, people share their opinions on tumblr, and if you're lucky you might get some kind of response or back and forth, but it isn't as easy there.

If you want some MGS forums there's http://mgsforums.com/index/ and also http://www.ign.com/boards/forums/metal-gear-solid.5200/ and http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/681794-metal-gear-solid-v-the-phantom-pain. There are others too if you're interested and you can just google for more. I tend to lurk on them though, and haven't posted on any in years. Maybe I should change that...

I'm not too familiar with asks either. The one time I tried to send an ask I got no response so I have no idea if I did it right or if the person just didn't want to respond. Still, if you find someone on tumblr you like, there's no shame in trying to send them an ask! Not everyone actually uses them just for questions, but sometimes just to say "Hey, I like your tumblr and you have good taste and you seem cool" or whatever.

Oh jesus, I had no idea there was a second page for GC. Maybe *I* should have gone in there when I brought fw the comm thing. Apologies to everyone in here.

I doubt anyone minds, honestly. You should check out GC though, it can be pretty fun!
