Re: When you date a non-nerd

I might just not be nerdy enough, but I don't only talk about fandom, not even with my nerdiest friends.

We talk about: school, politics, our animals, what's happening in our lives, the outrageous price of strawberries, where we want to travel, shopping, random news stories, the weather, life, children, relationships, our family, the fucking pollen in the air, exams, computers, love, sleeping, sex, LGBT stuff, other friends, classmates, how many times we've managed to accidentally hurt ourselves this week (we are a clumsy group of people), lecturers, what we've read lately, television shows, films, actors, celebrities, comedians, reality tv, love lives, drinking, what's new in science, statistics, IQ, feminism and an hundred other things. I just assumed that was normal?

I get the distinct feeling that OP just doesn't have much practice interacting with people outside of fandom, where you don't have to make the effort to find common ground because the common ground is ready-made. Couple that with the disdain that many people have for small talk--because apparently they only open their mouths to utter something profound that will amaze the whole room?--and I can imagine the difficulty. What they don't realize is that small talk is the mechanism by which people find common ground, so if you disdain it, you deprive yourself of a pretty reliable means of connecting with people.
