Physical pain negates emotional pain?
(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 02:34 am (UTC)(link)I work in a very stressful job that has both physical and emotional risks. Tonight my dad blew up, lost control, and starting yelling and kicking the shit out of the animal we were working with.
It scared the hell out of me, and really messed me up. But afterwards, I got physically hurt pretty badly, which cleared my mind and let me settle into a completely neutral, thought-free, emotion-free state.
Is this normal? To have your emotional pain completely wiped away when you're hurt physically? Is there a name for this?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 02:55 am (UTC)(link)i don't remember what exactly happens, but it's something about your brain ordering the release of pain-relief chemicals in response to pain

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 03:06 am (UTC)(link)Re: your original question, I don't know the scientific explanation, but I'd say that's pretty par for the course. As the other anon said, it's part of the rationale behind self-harm, and on a mainstream level it makes me think of every scene on TV or in a movie where a character is getting hysterical and another character slaps them to snap them out of it.
Re: Physical pain negates emotional pain?
(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 03:09 am (UTC)(link)That said, doing it on purpose isn't healthy, but it sounds like you didn't go out of your way to do it so I wouldn't worry too much.

In other news, I hope you reported your dad. Sounds like he needs to not be working in an environment with the stresses you alluded to and get some help -- for your safety and his as much as the animals'.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)I hope the animal is okay!
