Physical pain negates emotional pain?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno if this is common or healthy, but...

I work in a very stressful job that has both physical and emotional risks. Tonight my dad blew up, lost control, and starting yelling and kicking the shit out of the animal we were working with.

It scared the hell out of me, and really messed me up. But afterwards, I got physically hurt pretty badly, which cleared my mind and let me settle into a completely neutral, thought-free, emotion-free state.

Is this normal? To have your emotional pain completely wiped away when you're hurt physically? Is there a name for this?

it is normal (if not especially healthy) and why people cut themselves, actually

i don't remember what exactly happens, but it's something about your brain ordering the release of pain-relief chemicals in response to pain

I'm sorry that happened to you, OP. I hope you and the animal you were working with are okay. I hope your Dad isn't often that angry - please tell someone if this is a common occurrence.

Re: your original question, I don't know the scientific explanation, but I'd say that's pretty par for the course. As the other anon said, it's part of the rationale behind self-harm, and on a mainstream level it makes me think of every scene on TV or in a movie where a character is getting hysterical and another character slaps them to snap them out of it.

What the other anon said. It's why I've been known to cut at varying points in time because...well. When you're a lot of pain [emotionally] that neutral state can be quite the relief.

That said, doing it on purpose isn't healthy, but it sounds like you didn't go out of your way to do it so I wouldn't worry too much.

It happens. I think it's your body's attempt to prioritize its resources, you know? Physical pain might mean serious injury, which (biologically) takes precedence over emotional turmoil, at least in the short term.

Is the animal okay?

Sounds like what happens to me in high-risk situations. There's probably a chemical mechanism related to fight or flight, but it wouldn't be the same in everyone. Maybe if you're injured your body wants to take care of any immediate threat to protect and care for itself. Emotions can always happen when you're body's safe.

In other news, I hope you reported your dad. Sounds like he needs to not be working in an environment with the stresses you alluded to and get some help -- for your safety and his as much as the animals'.

I think it is pretty normal. IIRC, the brain processes physical and emotional pain in the same area, so a lot of the time once you've processed the physical pain, the emotional pain is taken care of too. But regardless of exact science, the phenomenon you've encountered is common and precisely why people self-harm.

I hope the animal is okay!
