Sounds like what happens to me in high-risk situations. There's probably a chemical mechanism related to fight or flight, but it wouldn't be the same in everyone. Maybe if you're injured your body wants to take care of any immediate threat to protect and care for itself. Emotions can always happen when you're body's safe.

In other news, I hope you reported your dad. Sounds like he needs to not be working in an environment with the stresses you alluded to and get some help -- for your safety and his as much as the animals'.
