So... that my friend and I, two women in their 20s play it together regularly and comment on how kickass she is and how awesome she is counts for nothing, I guess.

One of the reasons why the issue you're complaining about exists is because people like you discount something as empowering as soon as you realise the "male gaze" is still on it. However, it can still be empowering to someone *while* under the male gaze. When I play this game, it's empowering to me and I totally love it (it's probably my favourite game) and at that moment there is not a single male gaze to be seen.
