I just watched the E3 trailer and both female characters (one in black and one in red) were completely covered by their clothing (except for a panel in the back). Their boobs were not even that big...

I used to think the same thing, but then I watched this video:

It basically boils down to: Yes, Bayonetta is very sexual, but she is not sexual or submissive for you (the viewer), but simply because she wants to.

I don't see how this so called "parody" is supposed to be empowering. I find the Tits and Ass to be excessive and it completely turns me off to wanting to play the game. It's still fanboy fap material if you ask me.

It's not made for women, it's not made for empowerment of any kind except to empower the neckbeard slime who spend their pathetic lives wanking over the idea of controlling women.

Haven't played Bayonetta, but this is pretty much how I felt about High School of the Dead. The girls are smart and snarky and kick epic ass, but their tits are made of Jello and their skirts are filled with helium. It's annoying enough to almost come back 'round to hilarious again.

I think the difference is that Bayonetta is in control of her sexuality, compared to other female game characters. She owns it and uses it. So it comes off as "fuck yeah, kick ass woman," instead of male gazey.

My boyfriend played it (and I did briefly, but never finished) - but he did say something interesting to me. He said that, opposed to a lot of games, he felt almost embarrass looking at the protagonist. To me, that's probably the opposite of fap material. It's like you were looking at porn, and one of the actors got up, walked to the camera and said: you, whatcha thing you're doing watching me?" It's addressing it's own voyeurism in-game.

Obviously I don't know how many other men felt that way, but it shows to me the were at least ]trying] to do something different.

Other that that, I think it's actually a really fun game to play.

WELP I guess I'm a bad feminist or some shit because I love this game. Yep, there's fanservice. Yep, she doesn't shy away from her sexuality... by her choice. Honestly, if she's half naked after her clothes were burnt off during cutscenes and whining, moaning and groaning everytime she gets hit, I'd be turned off from the game. why else do I play it? Because it's fun and I love Platinum's games. Judge me all you want.

- sex isn't bad
- being sexy isn't bad
- even being sexualized isn't bad
- what's bad is the sexualization of characters eclipses their personalities, their autonomy, all the rest of the vast array of non-sexual experiences and motivations and perspectives they would have as human beings, basic laws of physics, etc
- what's also bad is when this only happens to female characters, and can never happen to male characters because it would make fanboys uncomfortable

when I first heard about it I thought it might not be offensive and sexist, but once I started seeing gifs where the game zoomed in on her vag and learned that she loses clothing as you level up, I changed my mind.

I don't know whether the game is good or bad because I've barely even skimmed a plot/character summary of it, I just know that I can't get over how much she looks like Sarah Palin. I know I'm not the first to make that observation, but seriously, it's a bit freaky. Also, a suit made out of hair sounds like it'd be really itchy.

I'm on neither side. I really can't choose one. Because in the end, both sides make good points. (Also bad points but I'm ignoring those.)

I think this is really a game where you have to sit down and decide for yourself and only yourself how you feel about it. Interpretations of what is happening can vary wildly and we need to recognize that. Someone can enjoy this game and not find it sexist. Someone can enjoy it but also find it sexist. They can also not enjoy it and be on either side of the sexism debate. And if you haven't played the game I choose to not care about your opinion.

I feel like at the moment I don't have the tools to properly analyze this game and figure out what it means on the larger scale. So I'm thinking this is something that's going to take time. I need time. I think it's also okay to not know how you feel about it or to struggle with it. I think it's okay if you take a long time to do so.

What I'm trying to say is this: I think this is far more complicated than the black and white of it is/isn't sexist. I think that complexity is important in learning where you stand on the issue. And honestly, I think it's important that we're having this discussion and seeing how people can view things so differently from us. (Maybe not exactly in this thread though... this one is kind of toxic.)
