(At this point I am sort of playing devil's advocate. I don't know much about Bayonetta, so I'm not sure where I'd stand on her portrayal specifically. But I do take issue with the implication that a woman needs to be unattractive in order to avoid being sexually objectified.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 05:21 am (UTC)(link)Anyway, yes, one can show skin and be sexy without being sexualized, and it's a fine line. I mostly just pointed out you didn't have to be because there's a misconception that a woman's sexuality pertains primarily to performative sexuality for men's enjoyment, making it about men and not herself. I guess one way to describe "sexualized" as in "there for the intended viewers' sexual pleasure".
I think some level of sexualization is not necessarily a bad thing, but even at a certain degree, women are sexualized disproportionately more than men, which is a problem.

So basically...fanservice. Are you arguing that fanservice with female characters is always bad? Do you think it precludes there being any other aspects to that character?

Are you the same anon I was talking to before?

This is true, but not the point we were discussing.
