Discovering Things Your Siblings/Other Family Hid From You Online

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This is kind of inspired by secret 5, because it made me remember how when I was 13 or so I discovered my 16-year-old sister's myspace page, and how she had written up a blogpost that retold my Dad snapping at my Mom for dropping something (a plate of food, I think. He's grumpy when he's hungry) into a full domestic incident with him being some emotionally abusive bastard treating my mother like a slave. Patently untrue and obviously written to match up with what her online friends were saying about their relatives. I was so vocally pissed off at her for it that she never posted on that blog again.

In a similar but non-infuriating vein, years later when I made an LJ she added me as a friend, not realizing that I could now see her private posts.

I found out way more about my sister's sex life (which at the time I didn't even know she had!) than I ever wanted to know. Ever.

(At least I learned from this what not to do in terms of making things private online.)

I realize that in this community we're the ones who are usually hiding shit that we've done/written online from our families, but have you ever come across that kind of thing from others in your family?

Not me. But an incident in high school consisted of some of my classmates discovering the LJ of another classmate. She was the odd one out to begin with, and apparently she'd written a post detailing her opinions on each person in the class (idk how it works in north america, but in my country classes are fairly small and everyone's known each other for a while so imagine how that went).

I never got to hear what it was that she had written. But the funny thing to me is that the LJ was found because one of us got so fucking bored in computer lab they randomly googled the nickname of a classmate.

Not my family, but I actually found out some disturbing stuff about my first boyfriend. . It actually started when I ran into one of his exes online, and she told me some things that were contradictory of some of the stuff he told me. Then I started digging.Turned out the guy was a pathological liar. He had Issues with a capital I, and he was a cheater. That pretty much ended the relationship.

My sister is fairly open and actually follows me on LJ and tumblr and doesn't seem to care about me seeing all wincest and stuff she reblogs.
Although one time when I was a tween and we only had the family computer I was digging around in her files and stumbled upon both hentai and nudes.

Not really? I'm not close enough to most of my family for them to hide anything - though I did accidentally run across smut that a [much younger] cousin had written [but that was after her telling me her handle so...]

I found out that one of my cousins is now dating who recently became another cousin's ex-wife. AWKWARD.

My brother is into porn with teenage characters (or illegal porn starring actual teenagers, I don't want to know). Found it accidentally when I borrowed his Smartphone to go to the Internet.

When you say teenagers, is this real underage teenagers or just american underage? Because most of the world has a lot looser rein on this stuff, well the non theocratic dictatorships at least.

I have no idea, it just said something like "teen porn" I didn't go to the actual website.

American Underage

Are you talking about *national* age, or state ages? 'Cause the later tends to vary a bit more than you'd think.

American Underage probably refers to the way everyone loses their shit whenever someone under eighteen dares to mention sex. It is embarrassing the way that happens, as if there is some switch in teenagers heads that goes from "asexual" to "sexual" at midnight on the day they turn eighteen.

For me, it's not that I think teenagers have a switch that goes from asexual to sexual when they turn 18. It's that I think teenagers should have sex / be sexual with people who are around their age/have about the same life experiences. I think a 16 year old with a 20 year old is much better than an 18 year old with a 30 year old. Even if the 18 year old is technically an "adult". Sure, some older people are considerate and fine, but it really seems wrong to me.

My family and I have never really... met online. The only thing I have ever done with them is take over my father's facebook account to post creepy pictures of lions and then I left with a riddle because I was bored. Apparently no one could tell my father's account had even been taken over which is weird because my dad and I type and act very differently online. I even started by announcing I has gotten onto his facebook so... my dad's friends are apparently idiots.

More on topic, I did learn about a friend talking behind my back when they added me as a friend on LJ because they didn't think I would snoop in their old posts. That really should have been an early warning sign to the clusterfuck that was that friendship.

One time I found out through Gaia of all places that two of my real life friends were dating.

Um... yeah, no, most of my revelations happen in real life. I apparently look like a very trustworthy person to divulge all your secrets to.

My sister and I follow each other on Tumblr. Despite this, my sister is VERY TMI on Tumblr and actively complains about our family on it. :/

I haven't found out anything, but people have found things out about me. My aunt found out I was trans, I think because of a school newspaper article that I was quoted in that ended up archived online.

Also, I think my best friend found out about my fetish because I accidentally favorite'd a fetish pic on deviantart... and he apparently was still checking in on my deviantart years after I'd posted anything on it because he is a big weird nosy creepster. And then he didn't even have the guts to ask me about it directly, just repeatedly vaguely alluded to my fetish and also deliberately did things that would turn me on? I only realized recently that he's probably known for years... /griping

I real want to know your fetish now, if your friend was able to evoke it in public without raising eyebrows but still turning you on...

My cousin posted pictures of my mother and I attending a family function TO HER FREAKING FACEBOOK and my stalker father sent HIS family members halfway across the country looking for us.

Cousin lost her Facebook privileges forthwith.

My sister used to draw furries. I suspect she still does it for money...

When dial-up internet came to our area, Mum JUMPED on it and it was a start of a lifelong obsession for me.

But I later found out that the reason she was so excited was because she worked at a company with internet and Dad kept pressuring her to download porn for him.

Apparently she once crashed the server trying to send out an email with megabytes of porn attached.

Thankfully my brothers and mom aren't interested in computers/the internet and I don't know where my dad posts or what handles he goes by.

I found my sister's LJ once and stumbled on an entry all about how she'd been snooping in my LJ. The difference is that my LJ is friends-locked and I'd caught her using my laptop to get into it, whereas her LJ was public and I honestly came across it by accident.

I haven't, but I suspect my little sister found my blog (which I subsequently deleted). She still hasn't admitted it but tbf I haven't exactly called her on it either.

I found out my cousin has a kid now, and the kid is about 6 or so.

I'm terrible at keeping up with my family.
