The book is good at exposing the white is default prejudice of many readers (and writers), which I'm also sometimes quilty of. All Gaiman had to do was not specify Shadow as a "black man," like a number of authors does when it comes to non-white characters (J.K. Rowling), and just write "man" and almost everyone jumped to the initial conclusion that he was white.
