The thing is, there are some people out there who are, if not jealous, then at any rate angry about seeing evidence that other people are happy. they're even pissed off to see people getting flowers at work from their SO, or having pictures of spouses and children on their desk, or dressed to go out after work.

Impressing these people matters ... why?

(PS: I'm one of those people with a sad life - but I like it anyway, and heck, more power to anyone who likes their life, regardless of how and why!)

Well, of course impressing such people doesn't matter a bit. But maybe the OP feels bad about distressing anybody.

I'm another of those people whose lives are a mess, but I still hope to make it better. I hope things get better for you too.

I had a coworker (who had started work the day before Valentines day) get upset that I had received flowers in the office and he had not.

I gave him some of the lollies because I felt slightly bad, but also boggled. It's your SECOND DAY.
