Re: (minor spoilers for SnK)
Wow. What would you get rid of?
You wouldn't really have to get rid of all that much. Say, you've got 30 minutes. Spend ten on introducing the world and the characters, ten on their backgrounds and training, and ten on the Battle of Trost. It's not as if the characters have been deeply developed in the anime so far or something. In the anime, for example, Eren goes on his I WANT TO KILL ALL THE TITANS (BECAUSE THEY KILLED MY MOTHER) rant ad nauseum, whereas in a film he'd only have to say it once (because it's only been a few minutes, the audience surely remembers) or possibly not at all, because his actions (seeing his mother die, joining the military, wanting to join the recon corps) and expressions (rage at the titans) would speak for him. ...Which is, by the by, SO MUCH BETTER STORYTELLING and something that would have served the mangaka well had he chosen to go that route.
The time spent on the battle of Trost could also be greatly reduced if character dialogue/exposition happened while the action moved forward, as opposed to slamming the brakes on the action (while the titans just meander about or do community theatre or something) every time someone needs to talk about strategy/their feelings/remember their childhood. For example, have them break into the supply area and then go immediately to them being lowered in the lift with guns - the audience doesn't need to watch Armin walk through this strategy, they can figure out what's going on as it happens on screen. Alternatively, cut that part out entirely, because all it establishes is that Armin is a better strategist than a fighter (which is established in numerous other scenes, making this superfluous), the soldiers generally succeed or fail predictably based on how they performed in training (again, already established elsewhere), and that the titans can be blinded momentarily to allow fighters to get to their vulnerable spots even though many of the fighters had thought firearms to be useless against them (which they then proceed to immediately disregard and never apply as a tactic again, so cutting this would help preserve the audience's faith in their intelligence, if anything).
But yeah as far as the main plot goes that scene didn't even need to be there at all, as one example of things you could cut. Cut needless repetition, cut dopey anime-isms that don't work with live actors (zooming in for several seconds on eye-quivers, characters flailing melodramatically with emotion/hunger/etc.), cut dramatic speeches down to their core elements or cut them out entirely. The one truly necessary "sit around and talk" conversation I can think of in the entire story so far where it wouldn't work if you tried to push the action forward at the same time and can't be cut is Eren's discussion with Reiner and Bertholdt in the dormitory during training.
Also, minimize the presence of the minor characters - just about every film adaptation necessarily does this, though. If they're not going to be important later, don't give them lines.

So "cutting it as much as (I) say" would make it streamlined and straightforward, not bogged down in tedium (like just another crappy shounen anime where it takes 40 chapters just to finish one fight because the characters keep pausing to give speeches, we have enough of those).
Re: (minor spoilers for SnK)
(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)And there's the fact many minor characters are becoming really important to the plot, so minimizing their presence would be a bad idea.
Even the one's that aren't relevant to the plot yet like Jean, Sasha and Connie(
though I'm convinced Connie and his family will become relevant soon)are the reason we know more about the world as it is, instead of the limited view Eren, Armin and Mikasa have.Re: (minor spoilers for SnK)
