I linguistically agree with you. My husband + me = couple or household. A family needs at least three people. I don't really care if there's kids, though. Someone's brother could live with them, or something.

That's actually a good point. Now that I think about it it's not necessarily that there are no kids so much as that there are just two people, that seems weird to me. If someone's sibling or something lived with them I would definitely count that.

So a parent with one child without another parent wouldn't be family?

Good point. It would be. You'd think I'd have thought of that, being an only child raised by a single mother.
