Re: Does a couple without kids count as "a family"?

A couple without kids is still a family. The view that they aren't a family unless they have children is an outdated idea born from a societal expectation that all couples would have children.

An aggregation of people which includes children is still different from an aggregation of people that doesn't, though, and I think there's a useful purpose to having different words to distinguish that difference. Having that distinction doesn't demand that we have any strict standards for how those aggregations are organized or structured, it's just about that distinction. Even if the origin of the view that a family is something different from a couple is old and wrong, that doesn't make the distinction itself outmoded or useless.

You do know that defining "family" in terms of parents + children is:
a) a historical innovation and
b) something of an ethnocentric conceit?
