I feel you, OP. English is the minority language where I live and I don't remember high school Spanish well enough to communicate with most people here. I also don't interact with people often or regularly enough to learn Spanish. I feel like a condescending jerk when I say something equivalent to "I sleep, but vacuum okay" but it really does help people understand what I'm trying to communicate most of the time. I've had people respond to me in kind in both English and Spanish, though I never really thought about it until just now that I don't judge them for doing it the way I judge myself.
