"Broken English" offensive or helpful?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
This afternoon, I came home, exhausted, to find the cleaning lady had arrived. I tried to tell her that I was going to take a nap, but not to worry about waking me up with the vacuum. It took a few tries and clarifications for her to understand me. Later on, I wondered if I should have said something like "I sleep, but vacuum okay". It just seems rude in my mind, which is why I didn't, but it struck me that if I were being spoken to in a language I wasn't fully comfortable with, I'd probably find that sort of speech to be much easier to follow.

I really don't have a good grasp of the etiquette surrounding these things. What would you say to this?

I live in a community in Canada where English might as well be the minority. I serve a lot of customers with poor English and more often than not broken or at least simplified English is a whole lot more helpful than proper speech. Honestly if their English is that poor, they won't know it well enough to be offended. :P

(I realize it's probably not helpful if they're trying to learn English, but I figure they're not there to learn from me, just to buy stuff. But still.)

where I work I often have to resort to hand motions and very slow speech to get my point across when we have foreign customers. I feel rude too, but they try to tip fairly often and I've never gotten a negative response so I guess it's not as offensive as we think it is.

I feel you, OP. English is the minority language where I live and I don't remember high school Spanish well enough to communicate with most people here. I also don't interact with people often or regularly enough to learn Spanish. I feel like a condescending jerk when I say something equivalent to "I sleep, but vacuum okay" but it really does help people understand what I'm trying to communicate most of the time. I've had people respond to me in kind in both English and Spanish, though I never really thought about it until just now that I don't judge them for doing it the way I judge myself.

I wouldn't be offended if someone speaking another language did that for me. All the articles get in the way of picking out the key words, and therefore ideas. So long as you know they don't understand English, or whichever language, I don't think it's that big a deal.

That's honestly how I'm learning American Sign Language. Plus a lot of extra gestures and finger-spelling. xP

Sounds like something where you have to take the temperature, yourself.

I don't think it's rude unless you go up to someone and speak broken english while just assuming that they don't speak english. Then you're just kind of racist. But you didn't do that, so I think you're fine. And I agree with others in the thread that broken english is probably easier for people who have a poor grasp of the language to understand. When I first came to America, that was the way I was most easily able to understand the language for a while. And then it wasn't long before I was able to speak and understand more complex sentences
